Slower with bigger tires
Just replaced slick 18" golf course tire (ran 19mph) with 20" trail wolf mud grip type tires. Now runs 16.5mph. How can this be? Everything I've read about says bigger tires = more speed. I've upgraded to 4ga cables.

Re: Slower with bigger tires
Check air pressure, check tire clearance, and check that none of your cables or components (F&R etc) are getting hot when you run the bigger tires....

Also...are you using an on board/built in speedometer on gps type? Tire size changes the built in type unless they are re-calibrated.

Re: Slower with bigger tires
What kind of controller do you have? Bigger tires should result in increased speed as long as you have a controller capable of putting out more amps, and a battery pack capable of supporting the controller (more amps). Also depends on you terrain. Flat vs. hilly affects this.

Re: Slower with bigger tires
Other than trading your '92 Marathon for a PDS cart with a speed chip, what all did you do to it to obtain 19MPH on 18" tires?
I do believe there is the odor of Bovine Scatology in the air here. |

Re: Slower with bigger tires
Just made another run down the road. Top speed(with iphone gps) 16.5 (i rounded up speed with original tires- actually 18.6, not 19). When i got back, checked all wires,f/r switch, motor= all cool. Tire pressure is 20#. tires have plenty of clearance.
I bought the cart used a few months ago so i dont know what upgrades, if any, have been done to it. As far as contoller, the sticker on it says Remanufactured FSIP Model 1204-001, Voltage 24-36, Current 400A. Upgrades I've done to it: installed new batteries, upgraded all cables to 4ga. Replaced motor brushes (and machined area where brushes ran on rotor). I wouldnt know what a speed chip was if it slapped me in the face |

Re: Slower with bigger tires
A "speed chip" is unique to PDS carts, whose performance modes can be changed by changing the "chip", which is actual a Molex plug with different pins jumpered.
With a "speed chip" a stock PDS cart (Sepex type motor) will max out at 18-19MPH on stock height (18") tires, or about 4500 motor RPM with a 12.44:1 differential ratio) A stock Marathon (Series wound motor) on stock height tires maxes out at about 12-13MPH, or about 3000 motor RPM with a 12.44:1 differential ratio. To get 18.6MPH (About 4400 motor RPM) with a Marathon, you would have to up the battery pack voltage or change the final drive ratio, or both. Or a high speed motor has been installed. I may owe you an apology for tossing the BS flag, but if your 92 Marathon was running at 18.6MPH on 18" tires, something major has been done to it in addition to the 400A controller. Motor RPM at 16.5MPH on 20" is still about 3500 with a stock rear end, so you might be maxing out the 400A controller with the bigger tires, and/or loosing enough voltage across the intrinsic resistance of the 4Ga cables at max current draw to lop off some of the top end. |

Re: Slower with bigger tires
The only reason i went with the trail wolf was because i wanted more traction for wet weather during winter for upcoming hunting season. Wonder if i'd be better off with some "knobby" 18" tires to maintain both speed and traction.
