Re: Guidance on replacing wheel bearings...
I just changed mine (Yamaha) and thank goodness I did not have to use a press. They were close tolerence but came out with a little help from a punch and hammer. Going back in I used my vise and some round pipe. Make sure to get the grease seal too. You will trash it taking it out. After I knocked everything out, I cleaned the housing and smeared a little bit of wheel bearing grease around the inside. Next (with the housing laying flat on the work bench) I tapped one bearing in a circular motion to get it started then found some steel pipe and cut off about 2 inches. I placed the pipe up next to the bearing and set it all in a vise and pressed it in. Same for the other bearing and the seal just got a little grease and it tapped right in with the hammer using the circular motion to get it lined up too.

Re: Guidance on replacing wheel bearings...
Thank you for that info. Very helpful. Are there 2 bearings per wheel, or just 1?

Re: Guidance on replacing wheel bearings...
In the rear there is one outer and one inner bearing per axle. Typically only the outer is changed, the inner is accessible through the differential only.
Remove the drum/hub Remove the snap ring Pull the bearing Remove 2nd snap ring Remove the seal Note seal orientation (position) Oil new seal and replace as original just in past the second detente for the snap ring. I set it with a 1 1/4" (? size) socket and 6 " extension. This way I can keep it square to the tube as I tap the extension driving the seal in. Install first snap ring, making sure it snaps into the detente. Oil the outer surface of the bearing and install the axle with bearing. Use a 6" 3/4 pipe nipple placed over the splined axle end if you must drive the bearing in a little. This is the same piece of pipe I used to place the bearing onto the axle with a 2# hammer while the shaft was held vertical in the shop vise. If you have cleaned the axle tube well it just slide right in on a light coat of oil....Install the second snap ring & make DAMsure the ring snaps into the detente. Reinstall the hub, torque the castle nut to 90-140 ft pds. |
