Default rainwater for batteries?

Can you collect rainwater from a (non metal surface) like clean corrugated plastic sheet into a clean plastic container and use the water for batteries?

Rainwater can contain impurities. Distilled water cannot, that is why it is the correct water for your batteries.

thanks gorno! just wandering if it was possible or ok to do so. I live by the coast in Costa Rica and have been collecting rainwater for all around usage. My pops said no problem as long as the rain does not come into contact with certain surfaces and there is no organic matter in the collection. Well... dang it.. I was hopin it would be ok.

I'm no chemist, and perhaps rainwater is OK, but I still stand by my first statement.

Make a small solar still. Sounds like you have plenty of sunshine!

Depending on their size, raindrops consists of dozens, hundreds or thousands of condensed water vapor droplets and nearly every droplet is formed around a condensation nuclei, which is a tiny speck of something floating in the air. Basically, the chemistry of rainwater depends on what particulates are available in the warm, moist air that cools off as it rises.

Here is a table showing the maximum allowable parts per million for various contaminants, but short of having a chemical analysis done on the rainwater collected, there is no way of knowing what is in it.

Bottom line, batteries are too expensive to take chances with, so use distilled water only.
Kab's idea about a solar still, if done correctly, will produce distilled water.

right on! thanks for all the responces! JohnnieB very informative.

Hi dawn86.. around here it is more expensive and I have to travel a good 30 miles on **** roads to get it (my ATV got ripped off and have no car) ... trying to be more self sufficent were I can... so I was just wandering... I will keep buying it.. batteries cost way to much to ruin them by adding impurities.

thanks!
