48 volt pds
I'm getting ready to add a couple more batteries to my PDS cart. I already have a 48 volt charger , a hd 48 volt solenoid and an Alltrax dcx 400 controller. I know i will have to change my SOC meter but is there anything else i will have to change? Will my 36 volt motor hold up to the added voltage? If any of yall have upgraded to 48 volts is the increase in power and run time noticable and worth doing? thanks

Re: 48 volt pds
The stock motor will be fine. It is definitely worth doing. You will want to re-program your controller for 48 volts but other than that it sounds like you have everything covered.

Re: 48 volt pds
Thanks,it has enough speed for me now on 36 volts but on a long hill it slows down pretty good. I rode about 6 or 7 miles the other day and the state of charge meter was down about half way when i got back to camp. How much will the 48 volts extend my range?I have the Turbo setting turned on my contoller , will i get better range with it turned off?

Re: 48 volt pds
To be honest I don't know how much it will extend your range to convert it to 48 volts, I've never ran mine until it died. The torque gain is enough by itself for me to make the conversion.

Re: 48 volt pds
Mathematically, just going from 6x6V to 8x6V will give you about 1/3 more run time and because you will be drawing roughly 1/3 fewer Amps at 48V, you might get more than that due to Peukert's law.
Of course, you might get less because it is human nature to flaunt it if you've got. ---------- Since you've got to replace the SoC meter anyway, this would be a good time to install a DVM type SoC meter. http://www.cartsunlimited.net/Digita...ry_Meters.html It works with 36V and 48V (All the way up to 199V), so you can install it now and it will work when you add more batteries. |

Re: 48 volt pds
my batteries are about 6 months old with very little use on them, is it ok to add 2 new batteries to a used pack? should i try to find a couple about the same age as mine?

Re: 48 volt pds
It would be best to find a couple about the same age and condition as the rest, but if you can't, the new batteries you get will assume the age and condition of the rest of the batteries.
Whichever way you end up with, charge the original 6 with a 36V charger two or three times back to back without discharging to get them fully charged and equalized. While doing that, fully charge the two batteries being added with a 12V charger. Then connect them into a 48V pack and charge then once or twice with your 48V charger and then break in the whole pack like they were all new batteries. http://www.cartsunlimited.net/Batter...n_Methods.html |

Re: 48 volt pds
FYI
The recommended battery in your cart holds 220 amp hours, a better battery would hold 225ah. In comparison an 8v battery may hold 190ah or a lesser model 160ah. So you will have less total amperage available with the 6/8v but like everybody said, the higher voltage uses less amperage but I have not heard of a reliable formula yet to answer this question.... |

Re: 48 volt pds
18 amps is plenty enough for any 180ah battery and most 190ah batts too. If it is a standalone type charger you can just change the plug, you may loose the Ezgo ignition interlock safety device.
