Swisher trail mower
Any one have any stories to tell about Swisher trail mowers? Planning to get one to pull behind my 2008 PDS with 400a Alltrax and 4gauge cables. I have about 3 acres to mow.
What kind speeds can you mow? What is the minimum speed the cart can go for extended periods? I suppose I can tweak my controller to limit speed, is this a good idea? Can I quickly call different presets? For those who don't know what I'm talking about. Here's a video: Thanks in advance. |

Re: Swisher trail mower
I haven't looked at the video but, since my dad was a landscaper by trade, I understand the concept. Based upon that, I would say you may be asking for trouble. The lawn tractors designed to pull these are geared much differently than the carts. Additionally, the tractors have transmissions to help reduce the overall gearing.
Your cart isn't designed to do this kind of work and I think the old adage; "use the proper tool for the job" applies here. I went back and looked at the video. ATV's have provisions for ultra low, high torque gearing too. Sorry but I still stand by my original opinion. |

Re: Swisher trail mower
Couldn't you say they need that gearing because they are gas powered? Not trying to argue, but just want to point out gearing is something of a gas powered handicap right?

Re: Swisher trail mower
While it's true that an electric motor is 100%, 100% of the time while a gas motor has to build up speed to reach it's peak in either hp or torque. The gearing used with typical utilitarian vehilcles allows them to reach that power mark faster than a single gear would allow.
ie, electric motor A builds 100 ftlbs of torque. It does it as soon as power is applied and throughout the entire run of the motor. Gas motor B has to reach 2200 rpm in order to achieve it's own 100 ftlbs limit. With a single gear, the electric is always at peak, but a gas motor may never achieve peak. But, add the additional gearing at the tranny and the gas motor can be at peak rpm almost instantly. So, yes, the need for gearing because they are gas powered. But, the gearing also allows them to maintain optimum speed without over usage. The single gearing of the cart can't do that. There are two speed rears for carts. They might help in this situation. But, you'll spend almost as much buying and installing it as you would for a used ATV. |

Re: Swisher trail mower
The golf cart motor and controller will build up too much heat going slow and pulling the mower. This may wind up costing you a motor and or a controller after a few cuttings.

Re: Swisher trail mower
The drive-system on a gas-cart doesn't like to be under load like that for a long time either.Either Gas or Electric cart,I would keep the mowing to a lawn-mower or 4-wheeler with the tow-behind.

Re: Swisher trail mower
5-7mph is about the speed I plan to mow. Is this considered slow?

Re: Swisher trail mower
Cart, you asked for opinions. I took the long way around. Others have been more direct. Your golf cart was not built to lug along towing anything. That mower weighs about 370 pounds. That's like dragging a couple average sized people behind you for almost 25 miles. To me, that seems like a lot of stress on your cart.
But, mine is just an opinion. Feel free to use it for whatever value you place on it. |

Re: Swisher trail mower
I think I mow at 4-5 mph at the most on my '11 Craftsman 24 hp rider. I would not do it as others mentioned....I was looking at the same type deal.

Re: Swisher trail mower
I appreciate the comments. I'm getting the sense that no one has experience with this lower behind an EZGO. Might just be a reason for that.
