Motor want run in reverse
Men,I have two questions. One is can I use a 36 volt battery charger for testing a motor????It has clamps and timer. Next question,I can't make a shunt wound 48 volt GE yamaha electric motor run in reverse. I have hooked two jumper wires, one from A! to F1 the other from A2 to F2,then applied voltage to both A's.The motor will run but not very well.It runs in a counter clock wise rotation, looking from the motor end. I can then reverse the input voltage on the A's and the motor still turns in the counter clock wise rotation.
Can someone tell me why????? Thanks sonny |

Re: Motor want run in reverse
OP sent me a PM and I solved the problem in my reply.
He is testing a has a Shunt wound motor (Sepex) motor by connecting the armature and field windings in series and connecting a 12V battery to the two ends. The motor still spins in same direction when he reverses the jumper wires from the 12V battery. That is normal. To reverse the direction the motor spins, you have to reverse the direction of current flow in either the armature or field winding. In other words, you have to change how the windings are jumped together He also had the jumpers wrong. Only one end of the A and F windings should be connected together and the battery attached to the other two studs. To revers the motor direction, move the jumper from the A winding to the other side of the field wind and now connect the battery to the stud the jumper was removed from. IE: +12V -> A1 -> A2 -> F1 -> F2 -> -12V makes the motor turn in one direction. +12V -> A1 -> A2 -> F2 -> F1 -> -12V makes the motor turn in the other direction -------------- Technical Note: Series and Shunt (Sepex) wound motors are essentially the same except for the size (gauge) and length of the stationary (Stator or Field) winding. In a series wound motor the same current flows through both the armature and stator, but in a shunt wound (Sepex) motor the field current is about 1/10 of the armature current. Both will spin with the windings connected in series, but you have to use lower voltage (12V or less) on the shunt wound motor or you'll burn out the field winding. |

Re: Motor want run in reverse
JohnnieB, Pull up electric motor products Inc. Look at the wiring diagram they have on their wed page. that's the diagram I was using.
Thanks again. Sonny |
