Default over tightened castle nuts :(

2000 PDS 3 bolt. Just put new tie rods and ball joints on my cart.

I have over tightened most of the castle nuts. The cotter pin is above the castle nut.. not really going thru the indentions on the nut. If I try to back them off the threaded part of the ball joint spins. Also the passenger side ball joint that is connected to the idler arm has a little bit of horizontal play when the front is lifted..when the cart is on the ground the horizontal play is not there. I tried adding some more grease but it seems full or maybe there is no space to add because I over tightend the castle nut? Also I noticed that the castle nuts on the idler arm rotate back and forth as the idler arm moves..they are tight but rotating?

Do I need to back off the castle nuts some how (maybe a C-Clamp would help?) and retighten? or just leave them like they are and just check on them once in a while?

ps. Thanks again guys!!! Gonkulor.. JohnnieB all of ya!

I am guessing but it sounds as if the unthreaded portion of the joints is too long
and you are not clamping them, try some washers under the nuts???

If i am thinking of the parts correctly, You should find a way to back the nuts off some. Those are made to be somewhat loose so giving parts can operate properly.

I'm in agreement with Dooms, just put some washers under the nuts. But I have concerns you got the right parts. The rods/joints should have tapered shafts and everything should fit very snug when assembled. My only concern would be if the tie rods or ball joints have sloppy side play when you had the nut ran down tight ie. the hole is bigger than the diameter of the tapered shaft.

With all that said, chances are the stuff you have is aftermarket , like everything these days, and the parts might be more universal fitting than the MFG specific part. If that is the case and everything is nice and snug.... some washers to get the cotter pin alignment needed is all you need to do bud.

Good luck
Shon

For articulating parts they often use n nylon washers as will, but may not be applicable in your situation.

Only use steel washers to space the nut down, otherwise it will flex and loosen-up.Moog steering-parts for cars/trucks come with a washer for this purpose on some front-end parts,so its' not uncommon. They use nylon or teflon washers on heim-ends,not standard rod-ends.Hope this helps.

It really does help pachanga90! When I removed the old ones, one side attaching to the idler arm had a washer? I am picking up some steel washers tomorrow.

Any suggestions on how to back the castle nuts off (the threaded part of the joint is spinning)? C-clamp or some than? should I use a bit of locktite on the nuts when I put them back on or no need?

One more question.. is there any need to grease the ball joints when they are new? They looked packed already?.

really appreciate this site and all of your guys help! thanks Shon, everyone!

Try a pry-bar,push down on the tie-rod,above the joint. An impact-wrench helps too, since it spins fast,it will walk them off quickly. Is there a flat exposed on the joint-side of the stud for a wrench?

From your description, I can't help but wonder if you might have stripped the threads.
