Default Stereo Memory Wire Question

I recently replaced my blown stereo with a JVC KD-HDR44. I ran my previous stereo off of a Fore-Par 48 volt to 12 volt reducer, which has a common negative for input and output. I used 12 volts from the battery pack for the memory wire and the power wire came from the reducer.

I was wondering if anyone knew how long the memory wire can be disconnected before losing its memory. I'd like to switch the memory wire from battery pack to the reducer as soon as it comes on, by using a SPDT relay. It may be stereo dependent, but if it could take a fraction of a second of power loss, I'd think this would be better, as the pack voltage varies with load, and the reducer should remain fairly constant. I don't like the thought of having the memory and power wires being at different potentials.

Thoughts?

I have an older JVC ( cassette tape ), Yeah, it's that old! Anyway, I was removing fuses one by one to find a draw from my vehicle battery, and I would pull the fuse and immediately replace it to see if this was my draw. I had the ground disconnected from the battery and a test light in series with the battery post and the cable end. What I wanted to see was the light go out when I reached the circuit with the draw. Now when I had disconnected the battery, I had it jumped to another battery just so I wouldn't lose my radio memory. In fact the memory draws so little current that it won't even light the test light! Ok, to answer you, I removed and immediately replaced each fuse ( maybe a second or even less ) and the memory was lost in this amount of time. I hope this helps! By the way, I found the draw to be a partially shorted brake light switch! Not enough to light the lamps, but it would drain the battery over a weekend.

Default Re: Stereo Memory Wire Question

I was afraid of that.

I just went for a test drive and monitoring one battery showed an instantaneous drop to 4.9 volts, which immediately recovered. It could have dropped even lower, as I don't know how fast the Alltrax ExRay responds. While climbing a steep hill, it dropped to 5.6, which is 11.2 volts to my memory wire. I'm assuming the reducer puts out 13 something, so that's two volts difference between the power and memory wire, the way I currently have it wired.

I don't have the fuse installed, until I get this figured out, but I'm wondering if this situation caused my last stereo to die. It powers up, but won't change inputs or change radio stations,, and no speaker output.

If the memory wire/relay trick won't work, I may try a small gellcell to power the memory wire, with a relay to put it in parallel to the stereo power wire, when the reducer powers up. I'll need to make sure it's small enough to keep from overloading the reducer, as it will go into "charge" mode when the reducer is on.
