Default Are these curious replies from the Golf Cart People?

In a nutshell, I'm not able to work on my cart myself. I also couldn't find anyone close to work on it, since the place I bought it closed shop. I found a place 90 miles from here that supposedly has a huge operation, selling and servicing carts all over the state.
I asked them about 6 weeks ago if they could work on my cart here at my house and he said they preferred to bring them to their shop.

I thought I needed new springs, maybe brakes, a new cable to my F/R switch assembly or even a new assembly, and a general servicing, so this seemed reasonable.

Today I called for an appointment and he said that they preferred to work on them at peoples' homes if possible.
Among other problems, I told him I thought I needed new springs and he said "Why?" I said they looked flat and there's a banging sound in the back when I go over bumps. He said "We usually only replace springs when they're broken or the owner requests new ones".
I asked if he could check out my controller and motor just to be sure they're okay and he said "They either work or they don't."
I asked if they would grease everything that needed greased and he said "Uh....yes, we could do that." (like only since I asked for it).

I'm getting some uncomfortable feelings here. I mean, am I wrong for thinking they can look at springs and now how much life you have left in them, without them being totally broken??
Am I wrong to assume that when you ask for general maintenance, they will grease what needs to be greased?
Am I expecting too much? Maybe the guy who answers the service phone doesn't know as much as the techs........I don't know.

Why is it so hard to find people to work on golf carts? Maybe people who own them are mostly mechanics, but it seems like there's lots of people out there who wouldn't know how, or have the energy or health to deal with it.

Another guy from this place is going to call to set up the appointment. I sure hope he says more things that seem reasonable than the first guy.

Please give me your opinion about the springs. Also, I'm assuming I need brakes because they don't hold very well......especially on a slight incline. I suppose they would say "they either work or they don't".........or "we only replace them when your cart falls into the creek because they didn't work."

Its a real bummer to need this cart so much, but not be able to find people around to service it.

A flat spring is sort of hard to judge. If the cart is 10 yrs old & you want new ones - get em. Otherwise wait for them to break.

Ask for a full cart & battery service and brakes. Have it brought to their shop. The work quality improves greatly over the 'in the dirt' or 'at your house' service. Have them call before they return the cart so they can tell you what all was done, checked, etc to avoid a second trip .

This sure sounds like you might be making a big deal out of one service trip. In my experience most of the people who own carts know nothing of what's under the seat and rely on the service techs 100% for support. Get the dang thing in the shop before it burns down. (reference a long running F&R problem) Tell them you want it serviced and checked bumper to bumper.

LOL Scottyb.........I know you're frustrated with me coming on here and whining about some things over and over. I can understand that. I have alot going on here that I needed this cart for, and I've been trying to make the right choices. I tend to perceive problems before they get bad, and ask about them, and it might sound like things are horrible before I do anything about them.

I've been waiting until we transplanted some pine trees out in the field, before I went without the cart. That happened Saturday.........so now I'm ready to give it up for awhile.
funny thing.......it wouldn't start on Saturday morning........the most important day to have it work. I finally got it started by jiggling that burned cable. It worked all day long. Took my son out into a field early Sunday morning for him to film a time-lapse sunrise. And it wouldn't start to come back. I jiggled the cable again intermittently over a couple hours and got it started. Drove back to the house and I'm not using again until its fixed.

Try not to get too frustrated with me Scotty.

You are just asking for trouble, jiggling burnt cables to use the cart. We were told this cart needed to run for a business operation ... Driving around to film sunrise is not essential work unless you are a professional photographer. I thought you were an arborist, forgive my confusion.

Now the cart is out of service and you still have yet to schedule a service. This was the situation we all aspired to avoid 3 or 4 months ago when the F&R problem first showed itself.

Yes I do get frustrated reading the same problem again. I can see you need help but you don't take the advice given.

Agreed, if you ask for advice, take it then act on it. Especially when the health and well being of your family is at risk

No, I'm not a professional arborist. You're confusing me with someone else. I'm a 62 year old retired nurse (female), who has some health problems. We live out in the country on 33 acres. My husband works in a city 25 miles from here. We just love nature and plant lots of things.
And yes, my son is a professional photographer. He had alot of equipment to take out to the field, and since the cart worked at that time, we used it.

I've called for an appointment and am waiting for a call-back from the technician.

I'm struggling with having a large property, garden, chickens, etc., and having very bad knees. For awhile, I wasn't sure of why I was having a plastic smell.......nothing ever got very hot and until recently, it didn't stop at inappropriate times. Yes, I pushed it a bit because of the problem finding someone to fix it, plus I had so much that absolutely needed to be done this Fall and I couldn't do it with my bad knees, without using the cart.

I DO listen to your suggestions. I really do. And I always appreciate them. But we're not all in the same place knowledge-wise/physically/situationally.
Most of the people on here are very mechanically inclined and some of the simplest things for you all, aren't simple for some of us.

I hope I can keep asking questions and you don't get too frustrated to answer them.

Listen to what these guys are telling you. Get your cart looked at and fixed. No "wire jiggling" or other such nonsense. Soon you will be coming onto this forum telling a sad story about how your cart caught on fire and now it needs....well....to be replaced.

So, right now your being penny-wise and pound-foolish.

Spend the maintenance $$$ and get it fixed right. If you use the cart and rely on it to get you around on your property....."Just Do It!"
