Battery break-in under minimal usage
On my new to me 2001 TXT with new trojan batteries, it appears that I dont drive it enough for the analog dial battery charge gauge to go lower than the charge area.
I run this cart up and down the hills around my property working along the fence line on the pastures but these things just don't lose a charge! I know that I need to drop them to 75% according to ScottyB's web site but what should I do? Should I continue to plug the charger in every night or run it until the batteries are low on charge then plug it in? With the money that I spent on these batteries I want to do this the right way the first time. Thanks guys. |

Re: Battery break-in under minimal usage
How do you know how low your batteries are, before you recharge them after a days ride? NUMBERS??, with a ( analog dial battery charge gauge ), how many miles/hours/minutes do you ride a day, before you park it for the night??, in Scotty's ( battery care ) he is saying that it is not good to go below 75% charge before you recharge, for the first 20 to 30 charges, not that you need to run the batteries down to 75% charged, before you recharge them, if you drive the cart for 15 minutes, charge it, and keep the water levels up on the batteries, hope this helps

People tend to push their cart to the limits of performance and endurance when they get new batteries, just to see what it will do and how far it will go. The net result is that the new batteries are are discharged more than they ought to be during the first couple dozen charge cycles and the batteries don't least quite as many years as they could have. You, on the other hand, are breaking them in the right way. A series of light discharges. ------------- Your analog battery level gauge works like the fuel gauges in pickups of yesteryear, you never really knew how many gallons of gas were in the tank, but when it read 1/4 tank or less, you had better be looking for a gas station. If you have a DVM (Digital Volt Meter), here is a chart that will tell you what your batteries' State of Charge is. Note: The voltages listed are taken 12 hours after the charger shuts off automatically, or about 15 minutes after the batteries have been discharged. New batteries will read a bit higher at 100%, but will fall in line with the chart as they age. ---------------- Just keep doing what you are doing (Charging every night), keep them watered properly and the terminals clean; And your new batteries will most likely provide you with several years of service. |

Re: Battery break-in under minimal usage
Thanks JohnnieB,
Been using the distilled water and keeping the batteries charges so I'll keep doing what I'm doing! Rib. Wish I could tell you how many miles but this thing has never seen pavement, just pasture land. If I noticed a real problem I'd break out the DMM and start taking readings. As a side note I got the analog gauge for the wife as it will be much easier than a look up table to determine how much she has left. |

I discovered I put a little over 5 miles on my riding lawnmower each time I harvest my lawn. (Lawn is a misnomer, weed patch, is closer to the truth.) 2. SWMBO (She Who Must Be Obeyed) is more artistic than technical, and I have one of scottyb's DVM battery meters installed, so I'm considering installing a analog "Fuel Gauge" for her. I don't want the batteries to be discharged below 50% State of Charge, so I'm going the run them down to 75% (37.3V for a 36V battery pack) and etch a line on the analog gauge faceplate (Clear plastic cover) and tell her to head back home when it gets down to that point. If you decide to do something similar, let the batteries rest about 15 minutes after running because the battery voltage climbs a little after the cart stops. |

I like the etched line idea...... I probably will eventually do a DVM for me and I do have a spare gps that I could mount in the cart.... hmmm....

If you don't have a GPS, a smart phone app will also work.
Nice of you to not call it an "idiot" gauge. |
