Default bad old batteries.... what damage can they do

Just curious on this one. Had a guy tell me I could fry my new controller if I continued to run my cart on week batteries. This time of year I just putt around the yard ( small one ) and on the street. I'm trying to hold out till the spring on new ones. Nothing gets hot, I always check.

Could I damage something doing this?

What is your "new" controller?

As far as I know, the DCS controller did not have a low battery shut off and the rest, or most the rest, of the commonly used ones do.
But I might be wrong.

What do you mean by weak batteries? They won't charge up to near normal pack voltage, or is it that they have a low capacity and short run time?

--------------

It probably isn't a good idea to run the cart with low voltage.

------------

You might try charging the living daylights out of the batteries and get a little more oomph out of them.

In a low voltage situation the motor draws extra amperage to make up for the voltage which is lacking. Passing amperage produces heat. Passing excessive amounts of amperage produces excessive amounts of heat... Some controllers can not handle the heat.... some just melt down. Others have low voltage cut offs in place. But some with low voltage cut offs in place are set ridiculously low from factories in the NW.
This is what you friend is referring to.

new controller- Altrax 400 non prog. w/ 4g cables and 200amp HD sol.
batteries fully charges but drain quick
when they die or cart slows I stop and park.
I was traveling home from an out of town hospital visit and ran up on an EZ GO dealer I didnt know about and picked his brain a little. He made the comment. I was just curious. Found out he has US batteries for 86$ ea. From what I've read here I thought that was a good price. and he delivers since he services a few local course's here.

That is most likely for an "Economy" grade battery.
USA Battery has 5 grades of 6V Golf Cart batteries ranging from 208AH to 251AH.
The Trojan T-105 @ 225AH is the de facto "Standard" battery.

Here's an alphabetical list of commonly available 6V Golf Cart batteries I put together.

I think it was either the 2200 or 125. I looked them up when I got home. It was either the 122 or 140 @75 minutes. It wasnt the lowest one.
