Welcome to BGW!

First, a 36V battery pack is typically six 6V 225 Amp-Hour deep cycle batteries rather than three 12V batteries, so the person that sold you the cart didn't do you any favors.

Three 12V will run the cart, but not for very long at a time and the batteries lifespan won't be very long either.

Need to know the body style and type motor to tell you how to wire it.
Enter the cart's serial number at this website and it will tell what it was when it left the factory. http://www.shopezgo.com/customer-ser...ialNumber.html
Also, the website tells you where to look for the serial number on the various body styles and years.

Any chance you could post up some pics of the motor and battery tray area. It would help us to identify what you have. If you can read any tags on the motor that will help too.

That is a resistor type drive.

If you follow the four white cables to the right of the motor in your second photo, they will go to three coils of wire. (The resistors)

Here are a schematic and wiring diagram.

Before you invest in batteries.

That old cart is a resistor coil drive.
It regulates speed by wasting amperage which it burns off as heat with the use of the resistor coils.
This was marvelous technology in 1950 when it was first put into use.
It is well suited for it's intended use but not much more in my opinion.
If you are looking for a cart to play with off road (particularly in the AZ sand) you would be much better off starting with a modern cart with Electronic speed control.
I hope this helps.
