87 ezgo voltage leaking to frame, I think?
I bought a 87 manuel but come to find out someone has put like a 1989 speed switch maybe even a speed contoller in it, my problem/question is 1.) with the key off should I be getting 36 volts on both large posts of the solenoid? 2.) to me something is leaking voltage to frame because if I touch positive side of meter to frame I read 34 volts, I even took off positive terminal from the battery and was reading 20 volts with it slowing going down over short period of time, so if a person had to guess what part might be leaking internally where would you start? Thanks for any insight to this problem

Re: 87 ezgo voltage leaking to frame, I think?
I would start with a cable inspection and then check the small wires anything that gets close to the frame. If all of the wires look good then I would wash the battery tops off and recheck. Do you have add-ons like lights or radio? Improperly installed add-ons can be a problem..... You need to figure out if your cart is a resistor coil or controller cart before you go much further?

Also, if you have a bunch of built up "crud" on top of your batteries it can drain the batteries.

Re: 87 ezgo voltage leaking to frame, I think?
All the batteries/cables connecting battereies are new and spotless ontop of batteries-lights I run off of a seperate 12volt deep cyle battery. Do you know if there is suppose to be 36volts on both large posts of solenoid with the key off? In reguard to it being resistor coil or contoller, it has the what looks like a speaker amp/power inverter box sitting upright in the same frame work as the solenoid speed switch/clump together.

Factory 87 Marathon was resistor controlled. What is the Mfg. number off plate inside passenger glove box?
Can you post a picture? It would help a lot. |

Re: 87 ezgo voltage leaking to frame, I think?
The solenoid I have on cart isNOT the one my manuel shows, the one on the cart has 2 large posts ontop and 2 small posts-I just replaced the 250ohm resistor that makes the loop across the 2 large posts the old one had rusted/worn into and the 2 small posts has a diode across them - I have not checked/taken off but shows rating bar towards back wall which should be in right flow direction. Also the speed switch isNot like the one in manuel-manuel shows a wiper slide type and the one on cart is small round piece with 4 wires coming out of it for directional control.

Number in glove box says 87 or did you need all the numbers?

Isn't that a controller and as to what year of contoller the prior owner installed I have no idea but am guessing 89.

Sounds like someone went with solenoid FNR.
Previous owner did some major rework. Pictures sure would help. As previously posted you should start the laborious task of isolating each and every cable and wire. |

Re: 87 ezgo voltage leaking to frame, I think?
The wiring diagram isn't the pic you needed? Positive probe of meter anywhere on frame and I get large about of voltage showing and when I disconnect leads/wires from positive side of battery the voltage doesNOT go away right then but shows on meter it starters dropping off slowly until meter finally will read zero.
