The battery terminal smokes and is starting to melt when the charger is hooked up to my 1987 EZGO electric cart. Is this caused by a bad battery?

Possibly, but it could be a bad cable or terminal. Replace cable and see if it still gets hot.

I would segregate the battery's and check them individually. I would also have to agree with PGGROVES with a poor connection at the terminal. Keep in mind that it takes more current to make it through a poor/corroded connection = heat.

My '87 EZ Go was doing the same thing....smoking, and a cable was melting. Turns out the cable connection was very loose, and quite corroded. I replaced all cables w/ 4 gauge cables. There is a noticable increase in power.
Good luck |
