Default 2008 RXV Headlight 12v installation. Converter needed?

I recently purchased a 2008 EZ-GO RXV. I'd like to add aftermarket headlights and perhaps a stereo system. I am new to the whole golf cart thing and have seen a lot of talk on the forums regarding a DC to DC converter or reducer to 12V. Ive noticed some models come with them stock, but i couldnt find one on mine. Any suggestions on whether or not I need one? And where I would connect it to if i do? Or if I dont where I could draw 12v current? Any help would be greatly appreciated and Ive included a couple photos of the cart.
Thank you,
Keith

HI Keith,

I have a EZGO 2008 PDS and what I did was put an extra 12v marine battery under the seat, wire it to a fuseblock and wire accessories to that. I also added a power port where I can use it to charge phone, etc as well as trickle charge the extra 12v. Not sure how the RXV is for room under the seat, but I have plenty on mine.

Many different was of doing it as you will get replies.

I bought my 08 RXV with a lights kit already installed.

There are a number of ways to accomplish getting the 12v supply needed from the 48v battery pack.

1). As Dawgn86 suggest, simply install an additional 12v battery to power the accessories. I assume this requires an addtional charger, or some gizmo to charge it from the 48v pack. Room might be a problem, but the additional battery will likely fix under the seat on the drivers side (but I haven't measured).

2). Wire to the + and - post on a single battery, this will give you 12v supply from the 48v pack. You can search the threads on BGW, but most of the resident experts recommend against this as it unbalances the battery pack and the 12v supply battery will both be pulled down further, and not be charged to as high a level as the rest of the pack.

3). Install a converter. You will need to make sure that the converter is switched and there are a number of ways to accomplish this, just search the threads on reducers or converters.

My cart originally had #2 above. After a few months I decided that in order to protect the battery pack, I would install a 48v - 12v DC to DC converter. I bought the EZGO OEM converter which included great instructions and is wired to the solenoid to control on/off. I'm happy with it. I used to see the lights dim slightly when pulling long hills, but that is no longer the case. Also, this particular converter automatically turns off about 2-minutes after the cart is turned off. Gives me time to get into the house with the lights, and the wife can't leave the lights on pulling down the pack.

Here's the cheapest site I found for this particular converter, although there are a lot of them out there and most are less expensive I wanted OEM:

It was ordered from Players, but shipped from EZGO saving $50.

Attached are the installation instructions, very easy hookup.

Thank you guys for the quick responses. They are much appreciated. I suppose since I already have a couple extra new 12v batteries and a trickle charger in my shop I ought to try that route first. I assume the downside of this approach is the extra weight and additional charging hookup time. Ill give it a try at least before I fork out the extra dough on the converter. Happy holidays everyone!

Keith

I used a new Diehard marine battery for mine. Not if the RXV has a hole behind your knee or not, but I put in a power port there..ran 10 g wire to the Diehard. I can trickle charge it overnight or use it for a spotlight, phone charger, etc.

I can run my headlights for a long time without having to recharge the battery as well.

Doesn't seem to me you can go wrong with this approach if you can find a place for the battery. A lot of the guys have gone with this solution. Zero drain on the main battery pack.

Keith, First Welcome to BGW !! You can learn a lot here..

Second, you may want to consider the factory light kit for your cart. The basic kit does not include the converter so you will still have to figure power issues but it will include everything else you need to do the lights. Just my 2 cents..

Also, does yours have the state of charge meter installed ?
