Default What does I.T.S. mean?

As I read more.....I ask more. Just like a 2 year old that keeps saying...."What's that?" What's that?" and on and on.

So, I keep reading about ITS Microswitch. Now, I understand the microswitch to be that little switch located under the floor which the accelerator peddle....let's say engages. But what I don't know and want to understand is what does "I.T.S" stand for?

Inductive Throttle Sensor, if I'm not mistaken. We just had to replace the sensor (not the microswitch) on my buddy's cart, MPNoffi.

So....its (not ITS) that nice new looking shiny black part you have installed in that rusty crappy looking peddle box? Ok....I get that now.

So....can you 'splain exactly how does that ITS gizmo work? I can see there is the rod that inserts into the ITS, and the further you press the peddle, the further the rod goes into the ITS (Black shiny new gizmo) and, of course, the more juice is spit out via the controller to the motor.

But....how does it do that?

Moving the plunger into the tube produces a varied voltage signal which is sent to the controller. It reads this signal as the peddle position and lets a corresponding amount of amperage flow through it.
Basically the controller is programed to pass 0-100% of it's capacity (amp rating) when given a signal of A-Z volts. The ITS is sending that A-Z signal based on how far into the tube the plunger is.

Hope this helps

Great explanation Scottyb. It's fun how simple of technology was used to build these things.

Well, that helps......somewhat...to a non-engineering type kind of brain. I'm going to guess as that plunger moves more into the ITS, there is less resistance in the ITS (as to current) and that's the signal that's sent to the controller that tells it how far your heavy foot is smashing the "gas peddle" to the floor.??

Close, but backwards.
The sensor is a coil of wire (inductor) and inserting an iron slug (the plunger) into it increases the inductive reactance (resistance to current flow).
It is fed by a constant voltage source and there is more ITS (Inductive Throttle System) circuitry inside the controller, but the net result is a signal that tells the controller how far to turn on.

FWIW: The same coil (sensor) is used, but different applied voltages, different amounts of voltage change and different directions of voltage change are used by different controllers, so when troubleshooting an ITS, make sure you have the specs for the specific controller the sensor is connected to.
