Default mineral oil in batteries

i have read on other forums that putting mineral oil in batteries stops gassing and minimizes the mess in the battery box area. apparently doesn affect longevity of batteries. anyone tried this or have any opinions.

I don't advocate putting anything other than distilled water in batteries, and I'm not sure if it will eliminate, or reduce, electrolysis (gassing), but it appears the some people in the RE, RV and boating worlds do it, so it may have merit.

I'll have to do a lot more research on the subject before trying it myself.

All it does is float on the electrolyte surface and since it is somewhat thicker than water, the gassing bubbles don't " pop " and splash the liquid as much. If you maintain your battery levels properly, you won't have any problems with overflow! Boaters have done this to help prevent the electrolyte from coming out of the batteries when in rough water conditions. It can damage the battery if it gets onto the plate material! IMHO, I wouldn't do it!

That's reason enough for me, seein' how my batteries were probably on their side for half a minute before we could upright the flipped over buggy.
