question about offset wheels

I understand that offset wheels may be needed for suspension clearances etc. What I would like to know is where can you buy cart wheels and specify your offset. I think most offsets are 2-3 1/2". Why not put a 6" offset. That would give you a wider track and more stability, or does it make it look funky, thus no one offers the options.

If you move the backspacing that far to one end of the rim, you loose to much stability because there is to much surface area with no center support.

The problem with making custom off-sets (backspacing) is that the rims are produced in mass production runs by the manufacturers.. It wouldnt be cost effective for a manufacturer to only produce on set with a custom off-set because of the related time to change the tooling and dies. Plus when you buy rims your buying from the retailer and not direct from the manufacturer.

I do understand what your saying though. I'm currently trying to find a 10x8 with 2 or 2.5" off-set.. Very limited choices with this offset..

If you want a 6" off-set, what you really want to look for is a 8" deep rim with 2" backspacing. I found one pair like that.. Dont look at the off-set when looking at rims, look at the "backspacing".. For example, a 10x8 rim is 10" in diameter and 8" deep. The average backspacing on a 10x8 rim is 3" (3 in the back in 5 in the front).. The lower the backspacing number, the farther your wheel will stick out.

Thanks for response. I'm sure it's more with manf. cost considerations than anything else, cause carts don't produce extreme torque like drag cars and you can order all different type of offsets for them.

You also have the option of buying wheel spacers to make them stick out farther. There are some high quality ones being offered these days like these:

Those spacers can cost more than wheels. Did you notice on the link you posted, they wanted $89 for two spacers. If you curser down to other products for sale on their site and the same thing is there for $69.

After installing my lift kit and new tires..., I noticed the new spindles in the front pushed the wheels further out than those in the back. I may eventually add a couple spacers in the back to even things out.

She still looks good though!

Actually - You should be the same width in the front as you are in the back with the Factory lift you have, Outback.

You could be right. The body style or shape may make it look like they are wider. I never squared it up and measured, but the back wheels stick out a few inches, while the front seem to stick out much further.

If I don't convince our board to allow use of the UTV's on park property, I'm selling my mule and buying another cart..., so I'll get to do this all over again.

So if you have a 12X7 rim with 2+5 it would stick out the same as an 10X8 with 3+5 ??
