Is this something to worry about?
I have a 1991 EZGO Marathon Electric which has been running fantastic by the way, when it is very cold outside and you take off on the cart in the cold in the morning the rear end makes a scraping noise coming from where you put the oil in on the rear axle. As you drive it and the gears are spinning the noise will go away after about 5 minutes of driving and as long as you are driving it the noise will never come back. If you get off the cart for a few hours and get back on and drive it later it will do it again but not as much as when it was sitting in one spot in the cold all night. It it usually goes away within a minute or two. The cart is left out in the cold garage all night to charge. When I put the cart in the Heated Building all night and pull out into the cold to drive the rear end doesn't make that metal scraping sound.
I believe what is happening here is when the Cart is in the Cold 24/7 the oil in the differential is very thick and sticky and harder to move up to the gears and it takes longer to reach the gears when it is thick and sticky. When the Oil is warm it is thin and easier to move so the noise does not occur because the Oil is getting flung around easier. It did not do this at all when it was warmer outside. Can someone confirm that for me? Noise or No Noise the cart runs like a champ, Gonna take the cart out tomorrow before we get the 2+ Feet of snow and 40 MPH Winds . Thanks, Matt |

Re: Is this something to worry about?
The manufacture calls for 30wt motor oil. Maybe the noise you hear is metal to metal gears until that thick oil gets to all the moving parts.

Re: Is this something to worry about?
I have 30 Wt in the cart now and there is the right amount in there. I think your right Scotty, that's what my Uncle seemed to think also. God I cant wait until summer. I love driving around the farm with the temperature in the 80s but below 0 not so much.
Thanks, Matt |

Re: Is this something to worry about?
I add STP to the oil in the diff so it will stick to the top gears and avoid dry starts.

Re: Is this something to worry about?
This is a long shot (extremely long), but there could be water in the diff. Each night it freezes up, and in the morning, driving it breaks it up into smaller pieces that grind around until they dissipate. Has the cart been splashing through creeks and streams all summer???

Re: Is this something to worry about?
Did it make the noise before you changed the oil? If not, how soon after you changed the oil did the noise begin?
Kinda hard to troubleshoot without hearing the noise, but my 1998 made noises too, and I replaced all bearings, seals, and oil, and placed a magnet in the used oil overnight. I found next to no metal shavings, and nothing large. I listened to ScottyB and put a tad of STD in mine, and it quieted up a bit, but not like new. Yours has a few more years on it, but years and miles can vary greatly from cart to cart. |

Re: Is this something to worry about?
The noise started when it got Cold. It didn't do it last year when it was cold. It started after we changed the oil so Maybe it had a different kind in there?
