Steering Box?
Hey guys, Since day one the cart has had some play in the steering. Tonight I jack up the cart on some stands and had a buddy turn the steering wheel alittle for me. What is does is it will turn left then before I turn right or vice versus it will have alittle play. So tonight the Main center pivot point in the steering house will wobble very noticable. It will do it riding or sitting still. Kinda like a riding mower. The steering gear seems ok, because its turning all the way both ways lifted, sitting still or riding. I have included some shots with outline and was wondering if this is a bearing that I can easily replace or do I need to replace the black arm or the steering box?
Thanks Guys |

Re: Steering Box?
Yes, that is a bearing. A bronze bearing to be exact. It cost about $10. Unless the "black arm" has severe wear you should not need to replace it.
Here is how I removed the bearing on mine. I welded around the inside of the bronze bearing in about 3 places. Don't worry about what it looks like or whether its a good weld. What happens is when the weld cools the weld also shrinks, making the bearing shrink in the process. It destroys the bearing but it looks like it is anyways so it doesn't matter. Then just knock it out. You may get lucky and it come right out anyways with too much trouble. To install the new bearing. Place the bearing in the freezer overnight. If you can bring the prepped and ready steering housing in the house close to the freezer....get it ready......pull the bearing out of the freezer real fast and put it in the steering housing. If it gets stuck mid-way get a 2x4 or similar peice of wood and knock it in place. At work we use liquid nitrogen to freeze bearings.....works reeeeal nice. While your waiting on the bearing to freeze you may take the time to disassemble the steering rack and clean it up real good and re-grease it with new grease. can't hurt. |

Re: Steering Box?
I haven't been able to locate a price. You should be ok, the bronze is alot softer than the steel so it will wear more. If it has worn completely through the bronze that may change.

Re: Steering Box?
Yes, they sell just the arm. It's not a common item thats why I can't find it or the price. If you get a service parts manual you will see the exploded diagram and the part numbers then you can call a site sponsor and let them price it for you.
