anyone who can help me out real quick....
i am looking at picking up a used 2005 EZGo TXT 36v. do you know if that model comes with the limited slip differential on the rear-end that ezgo uses? |

I doubt it. To check for LSD, jack it up and spin a tire. If the opposing tire spins in the same direction, it's LS. If the opposing tire spins the other way, it's an open diff.

Re: 2005 EZGO txt differential - need quick answer
ok. will test it kab. am i mistaken that all ezgo carts come with some sort of limited slip differential then? the way it was explained to me is that if there is wheel slippage on one wheel it will shift power to the other. is that accurate? thanks again...

No. Most carts have open diffs. While EZGO may have offered an optional LSD, I have only seen aftermarket units.

As a rule, yes. But just like an automobile differential, under ideal circumstances you can occasionally catch both wheels at the same time.

Re: 2005 EZGO txt differential - need quick answer
thanks kab. i guess i should add a little clarity to help as my question. i understand that open differentials allow each wheel to turn "independently" of the other. what i am specifically looking to answer is whether or not power is distributed to both wheels from the differential. that is to say, in conditions (ice, mud, etc.) where wheel slippage occurs, is the power supplied to another wheel to prevent the vehicle from getting stuck. it sounds like the answer is no....?

Re: 2005 EZGO txt differential - need quick answer
By and large, the wheel with the LEAST traction will be the one spinning. The idea behind the open diff is to allow the wheels to turn at diferent rates of speed such as while cornering. The wheel on the outside of the arc radius must spin faster than the one on the inside. If you weld the spider gears together so that both wheels are locked in at all times you will hear thie tire on the inside barking during turns. It can no longer operate independently and has to spin at the same RPM as the outside wheel.

Re: 2005 EZGO txt differential - need quick answer
understood. based on your last comment it sounds like power could be applied to either wheel (whichever has the least resistance). in summation, it very rarely will it be provided to both and never in circumstance where traction is needed on the wheel with the most resistance (in order to grab and pull the vehicle out of mud or ice, etc.)
thanks for sticking with me, i just like being thorough and clear. |

*Fonzi* "Correctamundo!!" *Fonzi off*
If you are in a hole you can sometimes manipulate the brake pedal to add resistance to the loose wheel in order to engage the other. Odds are though, that if one tire will not find traction, neither will the other. Situations like that make you extremely glad you put forth the effort to install that winch that everyone else laughed at you for doing. |
