Please Help - 89 Electric Ez Go / No Go
Hello,
Been checking your site as a non registered user. I am not familiar with electric motors and Have much to learn from you> Got a deal on an old 36V cart/no bateries. Thought I was smart(maybe wrong) to convert to 3-12V Batteries. Worked great when I first wired up-payed the guy and transported home.Vibration on trailer- Some wires broke loose-replaced most all (4Ga.) Re-wired as was, then No Go?? Contact on last battery Neg - to terminal block(probably not what it's called... gear control connects to it) was loose, So I over torked and it broke. So I know I have to find a replacement to make contact with gear control. questions: - Do automotive solenoids work as replacement? - Is bus connector(again probably not what it's called) between solenoid necessary?... wasn't on when purchased - Any ideas what I should do next? Gratefully yours- O.H. "Lovin Every Minute Of It" |

Welcome to mthe forum Old hickory................
You asked: - Do automotive solenoids work as replacement? - Is bus connector(again probably not what it's called) between solenoid necessary?... wasn't on when purchased - Any ideas what I should do next? -No, Automotive solenoids do not work. They are 12 volt and you need a 36 volt solenoid. -Sorry, I have no idea without seeing it. -Yes get reference help if you can. Use the wiring diagrams in the "stickies" at the top of the page when you back out of this page. |

Re: Please Help - 89 Electric Ez Go / No Go
Good advice Rusty. Old hickory will find out three 12v do not work as well as six 6v (or we all would be doing it!). It will work for a test but, result in shorter run time and battery life. A wiring diagram which best fits your cart will be the best advantage you can get now! Good luck!
P.S: I think your Gear control may be our Forward & Reverse switch here on refered to as the F&R |

Re: Please Help - 89 Electric Ez Go / No Go
Thanks Rusty and Scottyb. I am attaching some pics. I will re-install old solenoid (Didn't know if it was bad, just a shot in the dark) and replace the F&R contact stud. I had found some good diagrams and have followed them. Can you tell me how to test the solenoid?
Again thanks for replies. -O.H |

Raise rear wheels off ground using jack stands and use a jumper wire between the two large post of solenoid. If cart runs, theres your problem.

Re: Please Help - 89 Electric Ez Go / No Go
Mike is assuming everything else works. If that was the case then the test he suggested works indeed. However, in your case assume nothing works...
(You have never seen it work, right?) To 'bench test' a 36 volt solenoid do the following. Secure 36v+ to one of the large terminals. Attach 36v+ to one of the small terminals and connect 36- to the other small terminal. When these three connections are made you will have 36v + to the 2nd large terminal. |

Re: Please Help - 89 Electric Ez Go / No Go
Okay. okay, Picture #2. where do we start? what is in the box to the rear of the solenoid with the 4 cables going to it? Resistor coils? Solenoids? Both? I'm not an ezgo guy but, there are only so many ways to make these old timers work....Also, I don't want to hurt anyones feelings...but who put those braided ground cables and that super long red battery cable on there? The cables for these carts are supposed to be as large and as short as possible. And covered ! There is no chassis ground. I repeat myself. There is never a chassis ground on an electrical golf cart. Hope this helps

Re: Please Help - 89 Electric Ez Go / No Go
Those are some bigass 12 volt tractor batts? They look like could start a tank. But they won't perform like golf cart batteries.
