Brake light switch question
Looks like I'm going to be driving my cart on some roads with more traffic than I have in the past, so I'm going to add some turn signals and brake lights.
(They are not main roads, so I'm legal without them, but SWMBO will feel safer with them. ) Nothing fancy, no headlights or tail lights are needed. Basically, I'm going to hang four motorcycle type Amber LED turn signals from brackets on the underside of the roof (First picture) and two Red LED light bars for Brake Lights on the back of the roof (Second picture) I plan feed the output from a LED turn signal flasher through a SPDT/Center-Off toggle switch by my right knee for the turn signals, but I'm not sure what to use for the Brake Light switch. I think there are switches that mount on the brake pedal pad and ones that mount under the cart on the brake level arm. Any suggestions? |

Re: Brake light switch question
I used the one that mounted underneath on the arm with a spring. I am not sure how "fun" it would be without the cart on a lift.

Re: Brake light switch question
I was just working on putting brake lights on my TXT and i used some Harley motorcycle lights i had laying around, they fit right in the holes already in the bagwell, and they are blue dots, i was looking for a brake light switch and i'm going to try this, i think it will work and be easy, just need to search for the one with the right amps

Re: Brake light switch question
Thanks,
I hadn't thought about using a tilt switch. I'll be running LEDs, so amps isn't an issue. I do like the round brake lights better, but I want then high, Maybe hang them under the roof from a bracket. Guess it's time to do some more searching. |

Re: Brake light switch question
I looked at using a push type industrial limit switch, that's NC. A rotary limit switch with a "whisker" would also work. Unless you kill the power when you park, you'll need a timer, to turn them off when parked. Two limit switches could also work - one to turn it on, and a second one that kills it when the parking brake linkage is engaged.

Re: Brake light switch question
I have one of the switches that are used for the horn that some kits use by drilling a hole in the brake pedal. I have to admit it is not comfortable stepping in it but gives you the option of either using the brake lights or not.
I will send it to you for the shipping cost if you like. |

Re: Brake light switch question
I have a larger version of of the pedal box microswitch under my mat. Since it can be wired NO or NC, you can have it actuate by either way. I got it at the HAMvention from a dealer in '12. I also used a rocker switch to kill the power when the cart is parked. One of these days I'll do it right and build a timer.

Re: Brake light switch question
Thanks for all they replies. Lots of good ideas and food for thought.
------------- @ azTony: Thanks for the generous offer, but I'm going to stick with a switch under the floor so the wiring doesn't show. ----------- I haven't decided on the power source yet, but it'll either be a separate 12V battery via a 3 position keyswitch or a 42V-12V converter that is controlled by the keyswitch. Either setup will kill the 12V when the key is off, so the brake lights won't stay on forever when the parking brake is set. |
