Default My first Noob question

I just purchased the cart in February and it was running great until last week. It is a 98 TXT Series, 36 volt - NO RUN/TOW switch! Anyways, it stopped working last week and all will do is shudder when you press the pedal. I looked at the batteries and cleaned the terminals/connections...noticing I have a mixture of 4 ga and 6 ga cables. Will be ordering 2 ga sometime today so no worries. Also noticed that 2 wires were burnt at the connectors. 1 wire is coming from the reed switch to B+ and the other is a green wire that was connected to B+ ( then runs to the fuse block ). Hoping to fix those after I locate my friend that I bum electrical stuff from.

My question is the batteries are holding a charge of 6.4 to 6.5 - total pack charge was 37.4 ( hasn't been charged in about a week ). I currently have them sitting out on a piece of plywood and would like to keep them there until I get the 2 ga wires. Seems to be easier with them out when replacing wires to motor and controller. Will that be an issue or should I put them back in the cart? I have always been told NOT to have them laying on concrete/ground.

storing them on a board is fine, just direct contact to the floor is what you want to avoid. as what you may want to do is connect up the cables to restore your 36 volts and then hook the charger up to them and get them back to 100% while they are out. that way they are ready to go when you get ready. that's how I store mine and have had no issues.

As far as the burnt wires. I am not sure what to tell you on that one. Hopefully as you work thru you will find the answer or someone on here can get you pointed in the right direction.

Good luck!

The green wire from B+ to the fuse block worries me.
Stock accessory wiring uses a green wire to the fuse block, but it was connected to the positive terminal of the center-rear battery, tapping the 36V pack at 12V for the lights and stuff.

The other wire is probably bypassing the reed switch rather than going to it.

--------
If the batteries were from 6.4V to 6.5V, the pack would be from 38.4V to 39.0V, yet it measures 37.4V. Those cable must be mighty bad.

However, use what you've got to connect the batteries together and keep them charged.

----------

The thingy about not sitting lead-acid batteries on concrete is a leftover from an era when batteries were wooded boxes and the jugs (cells) were sealed with pitch and tar. The jugs leaked and electrolyte got intro the wood and ground water rises to the surface of concrete floors when you sit something on them. That combination completed a current path and the batteries discharged quickly.

Modern batteries with jugs the electrolyte doesn't seep out of, don't have that problem.

However, when my batteries are going to be sitting on a concrete floor for any significant length of time, I cover the concrete with plastic and place carboard or wood on top of the plastic to sit the batteries on.

Hook enough interconnecting cables up and charge them. Batteries should always be fully charged, especially if they will be stored for a while.

As to laying on concrete, I've heard that all my life and finally found a source that may explain that:
