Can't find year/model/sn/etc. on this old dog
Picked this old girl up for 3 bills yesterday and finally gotter running. First cart I've ever owned. Neighbor kids have one so naturally mine wanted one and after swearing I wouldn't be buying a golf cart... well at 300 and a good working charger thrown in (model 20484 Green machine dealy) with two 12v working marine bats... - never say never I guess. I have no idea what year/model/etc., she is tho. Heck I can't even find the serial number and can't read the plate on the motor cuz it's so scratched and faded. About all I can tell you is the old codger I bought it from said he thought it was an early 80s model. It's an Ez-Go 36 V, that much is obvious, but does anyone know what year, model, anything else about this old beauty?
Now I can hear you all saying, "what a cart! Wish I had one with that much rust! Lucky SOB!" Ya I know, she's a bute! All kidding aside I love this forum and reading through many different posts you all kind of have me hooked on these little buggies. Thanks for all the great info! I have a few techy questions about what you can probably tell was an expert 12v bat conversion on this old dog and maybe bringing her up to 48 v, because she's a bit slow. But I'm no spring chicken either and aint movin to fast myself. Sure would be nice if they had a Carl Lewis conversion for these old legs like the 48 upgrade for a 36. Anyway, I just gotta find out what she's called first then I'll probably ask a few questions about getting her running a little faster. Thanks all! |

Re: Can't find year/model/sn/etc. on this old dog
you have a ezgo marathon. they are a resistor cart (no controller like the newer medalists and newer carts) with batteries ran in series. as for your serial number look under the dash on the passenger side. the year will either be the first 2 numbers or the last 2. mine is a 79xxxx and is basically the same cart. ezgo never changed there carts much through the years. as for your batteries, the 3 12v batts arent a good idea. 6-6v deep cycle batts are what you want for that cart. you can add 2 more and put them in the bag well or go with 6-8v batts to get 48v but iv heard you will burn up your resistors if you go with 48v pack. more the batteries the more Ah (amp hours) you get per pack which is run time between charges. the 3-12v you have are different makes which might not be the same as each other internally. all your batteries which ever you get need to be the exact same ones. other people on here like johnnyb or scottyb know alot more than i do so im sure they can break it down for you and correct me if im wrong in any area. im still learning too. best of luck.

just looked at your cart a little better. where the passenger's left foot would be, there is something mounted on the side of what im calling the "hump". my serial number is located exactly where that thing is. might try taking it off and seeing if your serial number is hiding behind it.

Re: Can't find year/model/sn/etc. on this old dog
Thanks deltaboy! Man I really appreciate the help. It is great to know what she finally is! I will check for the SN and let you know what I find out. I really appreciate the help on the bats too. Kids just road around on it for about 45 minutes and she's dead! I think one of the batteries I have that came with it is toast. Had it tested at O'Reilleys but the cart is *** slow and dying fast is a bad sign somethins up. Hey if I went out and picked up some new 12 volts can you recommend some good ones that won't kill me on $? This is a great forum lots of good ppl. Thanks again deltaboy!

Re: Can't find year/model/sn/etc. on this old dog
One other thing - I was wondering is if I am smoking the 12ers charging off the Green machine. Is that a no-no to charge 12vs off the 36v charger that came with the original 6? The charger I have is on a timed cycle it looks like. Just hoping it shuts off when batteries are juiced up. The more they get near full charge it does drop real low to 3-5amps or so on the meter. I guess when the batteries explode or I melt all the wires together I'll know for sure...

Re: Can't find year/model/sn/etc. on this old dog
3 X 12V = 36V, so the 36V charger should charge them okay.
As long as it doesn't go much over 20A when it first comes on, it shouldn't cook them. Resistor carts are terribly inefficient (Use about same energy, no matter what the speed is) and six of the least expensive 6V deep cycle batteries will give you more run-time than three of the best 12V deep cycle batteries. And the 6V batteries will have a longer lifespan because you won't be loading them as heavily. There is a conversion kit to upgrade a resistor cart to a controller cart, but I'm not sure if it work on the ones with the motor in front of the differential. http://www.cartsunlimited.net/Scotty...rsion_Kit.html Here is a service manual for the cart. |

Re: Can't find year/model/sn/etc. on this old dog
You guys are seriously awesome. Thank you for the help! I am definitely going to go the 6v route eventually. Just curious if when I reach that point if I can convert it up to a 48v while I am at it. I have been reading around on the forum to see what is all entailed and it seems like I may have to go with 4 guauge and possibly a 48v solenoid. Would there be anything else I would have to upgrade on this old beauty to get her to 48? How bout the charger - would I have to get a new one? Would I notice some big power gains going to 48? I think there is quite a lot of mis-information out there on the powergains, run-time, etc. when going from 36 - 48 volts. Would be interesting to get the straight scoop.
