Default 2000 TXT brake system rebuild

I didn't see a section or thread on rebuilding mechanical brakes but please redirect me if I missed one.

I'm in the process of rebuilding the brakes on a 2000 EZGO TXT. The cart has not been driven in a few years and the drivers side brakes were rubbing when I finally got batteries in it. Fortunately, pedal travel/linkage forward of the compensator seems to be OK.

Tearing the thing apart the brake shoes on the drivers side were shot. Pass side shoes were better, but worn. The drums were very dirty but look OK. The brake cables are worn & rusted tight at the clevis pin (both sides). The compensator is a scary gnarly rusted mess too. I figure the whole rusted mess kept the drivers side from retracting properly and I'm surprised there were any brakes at all.

Knowing the above, here is my parts list so far for the rebuild:

Shoes, spring kits, brake cable kit, brake compensator, clevis pins, brake line retaining clips and brake adjuster kits.

What am I forgetting? Any shortcuts or tips for this job? Anything I didn't check? Missing parts?

Just a personal preference: When I did mine I replaced the drums too. It is a safety item and it's my life at stake. It's even more important if you have family that will be riding or operating it.
My thought process was, if the cables and springs were rusted and corroded to the point of my considering them to be "ugly" the cast drums could just as weak as they looked.

Didn't even think about replacing the drums. They looked pretty good. If they were at all roached out I'd replace them in a heartbeat (mine that is).

Think I'll do the rest of the rebuild when the parts arrive & hold off on the drums for now.

Appreciate the list review!

check out the prices on a complete rear brake assy vs the individual pieces. I know EZGO sells them. I used to do this if the cart needed everything. It was cheaper to the customer and easier/faster for me to install. Now drums were separate. the kit will come with backing plate, springs, shoes, tensioner, etc. basically unbolt your backing plate from the axle and install all new. Maybe easier to do for you. just an idea.

Another idea is to install the Ausco rear disc brake package. VERY NICE!

Thanks for the reply. I did look into that - none of the local parts places carry them and when you add shipping to an on-line order it makes it a good deal more expensive. I'm a little old school & don't mind getting my hands dirty anyway though.

Actually, most of the brake parts themselves are pretty reasonable except for the brake cable kit and the brake compensator. I want OEM for the cable since it has a Teflon lining - which makes so much sense when you think about it.

Those are nice brakes and I had looked at disc - but this cart is driven on flat concrete, usually 1 passenger and without cargo. They seemed to be overkill for the way the cart is used.

Links:

Owner's, Parts, and Service Manuals:
http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/elect...g-manuals.html

Whole chapter on brakes.

FWIW, I have a HS motor and eight T-105s, so even with the added weight of two batts and passengers free-wheeling at over 35 mph, I can lock 'em up. I have stock tires though. Larger tires will need more stopping power.

Thanks for the link. I already had a copy of the manual from another source. There are a few areas where the manual could be clearer, but it does a nice basic job.

I'm completely stock except for a headlight kit and I doubt if I've ever had it over 20 MPH +/-. That could change if I screw up this brake rebuild though!

There are three manuals, Owners, Parts, and Service. The Parts manuals has good exploded diagrams.
