Default Arcing on new contact board.

I was given an '81 EZGO Marathon (I think) a few years back and decided to put new batteries in it an finally use it this year. After removing the old batteries along with the battery trays and welding in new steel I thought it was time for the vinyl wrap and I was done. WRONG. I got the new batteries in only to find it was arcing and actually sticking between the #1 and #2 contacts. A week later i put in a new board and and wiper but it's still doing the exact same thing. Anytime I ease into the accelerator I can hear and then smell it, sometimes it still sticks.

One of my friends sells/leases/works on carts occassionally and this has got him stumped too. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I've probably left out some details of the cart that would help, let me know what information I left out.

You might want to consider investing in a solid state controller especially since you have already invested in new batteries.

my new board is still sizzling as well, but not arcing like it was. Went over all the wireing and everything was correct. Don't know either, but mine is between post 4 and 5

Yep, I'm at a complete standstill here. Gone over every wire on the thing and can't find anything wrong. i suppose it's going to have to be all or nothing, good thing the tires stick out in front of everything else. I can just fly up the trailer and hit the front of it.

Thanks for the input Volt, but I got what I think is one helluva deal on batteries and there's no way I could talk my wife into putting another $700 dollars into a cart that is almost as old as I am.

Mine seems to be limited to the 4 post. Going to disconnect that speed and try that. Maybe the resistor coil????

Check the resistor coils, just had to redo mine now it's good to go. No more arcing at the board and full speed control

Welcome to BGW

if the resistor coil is broke, or if the coils are touching each other you will have this problem, the board and the wiper board both have to have clean and flat studs, on the wiper board to, some times you have to snug up the nut to make it tighter, can you post some pic of your set up?

my coils were burnt at the ends... I just cut off the burnt stuff and bent them so they would mount up, installed and it ran great. The middle coil was completely loose banging against the other coils and shorting to the frame. There's a couple of pics on my members rides post here:
