Which brake shoe is leading and which is trailing?

Ok, so I'm replacing brake shoes on a 1994 Marathon electric cart. I know there is a leading and a trailing shoe, and the shoes I bought look exactly like the ones I took off. However, I read online that the longer shoe with the tapered end goes to the front of the hub (towards front of cart) and the shorter shoe with the flat end goes to the rear. This is not how the ones I removed were installed. The longer shoe was to the rear and the shorter was to the front. Were the instructions online wrong or have my shoes been replaced before and installed wrong? Any help would be great. Thanks.

Donnie, I remember the long shoe in the front. I tapered both ends of both pads to reduce chatter, remember to lube the high spots on the backing plate too. There is a service manual in the stickies.

Well, thats the opposite of what Sir Nuke just posted, lol. I'm going to install them like that diagram shows, and I was going to lube all the worn looking places on the backing plate. Any particular type lube I should use? Are there any no-no's?

White lithium grease on brake components/backing plates. Keep it out of contact surfaces between the shoe lining and drum surface. Also the leading shoe is always the shoe pushing with the wheel rotation, so if its wheel rotation right it will be the shoe on the right, the shoe on the left pushes into the rotation.

and ScottyB is correct. Tapering the ends creates a smoother brake esp in light applications and cuts down on brake judder and noise issues.

That practice hails back to my early automotive training. About 100 yrs ago when cars had 4 drums.

Ha..Scotty. Me too! Some things you can't purge from your head, and back then we always scuffed the brake lining with 80 grit sandpaper to help them break in. On a golf cart thats fine but on a Porsche's drum or disc pad.....Noooooo. It impregnates the sandpaper grit into the lining. Funny how it was all fine back then.
