Default Used Batteries - Should I Buy

I found a set of 4 - 2012 Energizer EGC8 and 2 - 2013 Interstate batteries for sale. They all are holding 8.4V. They want $400 for all of them which is cheaper then I can get reconditioned batteries for.

I know this isn't ideal and I would much rather buy 6 new Trojan batteries but if these will work for a few years the money savings would be nice.

Thoughts?

Always a tough call. If it were me, I'd take a simple load tester and test each one first. Good deal if they hold up. IMO, Trojan's can fail just as much as any other brand. Good luck...

I've read poor reviews of the energizer batteries on the forum. I eventually got all new Crown CR-235 batteries. I would shy away from used batteries because you have no way of knowing if they were properly broke in. Also, how do you know if the batteries have sat for the 12 hours before the volts were read?

These batteries were used in a guys custom suburban to run his stereo system. They were only charged with his alternator. When I first asked about voltage he sent me a pic of his DVM with a reading of 8.1. I told him this was not good so he put them on charge and now says they read 8.4 - 8.5. I will definitely bring my own meter when I pick them up.

As CCJeff suggested, you should bring a load tester with also. Battery voltage on my batts showed okay, but one of the failed the load test.

to me for 400.00 I wouldn't bother , add 200.00 more and get a new set that you can break in right and maintain. worth it in the long run ...

If these are for your shuttle you have it listed as 36v. You need 6 volt batteries, not 8 volt. I picked up a set of brand new 6 volt batteries in February for around $540.

I am converting to 48V. So I need 8V.

I can't find batteries for $600. I will also have to purchase a charger which will cost me $300. So the 48V upgrade with new Trojans and a charger is going to run me +/- $1,300.

With these batteries it would be cut in almost half to $700.

I know this isn't ideal but $600 savings will help me purchase the lift kit, wheels and tires I want.
