Unhappy '95 medalist rear wobble

Fellow buggy enthusiasts,

I started looking for a cart a few months ago and the only one i could find on the island was a ridden hard put away wet 36v '95 medalist. I figured I'd build a buggy in a few weeks to tote my GF and surf boards down to the beach. Well, 8 weeks later I've got a bunch of weekends and more money than I imagined in it - no bed, no paint, and no surf racks yet. Call it hubris of the newbie.
Anyway, so far I've fixed/welded/painted frame, added 5"lift, d&d motor +400A Altrax, and made some 4g cables. On the test run I noticed a grinding in the front wheel bearings and a fairly nasty vertical wobble at speed in the rear end. When I attempted to investigate the problem on the driver's side rear, i found the second ezgo weakpoint, after frame rust, the permanently rusted/attached hub. After copious heat/beat, fab puller, destroy puller with air gun at 200psi and a few beers i decided to cut off the drum. This generated a lot of sticky rust dust and some cussing and then reefing on wrecking bars stuffed into each apposing cut notch (a 4.5" grinding wheel can't reach the inside of the drum).

my parts came in from the mainland. so, after work i installed a new DS axle, bearing, drum, rim, and lug nuts, and... there still is a bobble. When on jack stands the rear wheels wobble left to right and up and down about 3/16th". Is there something I can change in the diff or do I need a whole new axle housing?

Sorry for the long post - any help would b appreciated - I'm onto the front hubs this weekend
Confused newb... Joe

Jack the cart up and turn the wheel while holding a piece of chalk near the side and then the bottom, to mark the "outer travel" of the wobble. Now either rotate the wheel 90° or swap it to the other side, and turn the wheel to see if the wobble is the tire itself or the axle.

also, might try, take both rear wheels, and drums off. have someone press the gas, both axles should be spinning (if no bigger problems may be getting you, badly bent axles?), look to see if the splined axle shaft (ONLY THE PART THAT THE BRAKE DRUM SILDES ON TO) may be bent on either side... as said above, check rims and tires for runout. lucky for you, if you can find the exact cause, most of the individual parts are not crazy expensive. if your entire axle housing were broken or badly damaged, oil would be leakimg everywhere, ALOT (heres hoping there is still some oil in there). a simple bent rim may be the cause of your problem. you did try pushing the whole tire/rim/axle side-to-side to see if the spring bushings/suspension was not falling off right?

Cg and Yurtle, thanks for the responses - I was on big island all weekend in the woods so didn't get much cart time.

- drums off: both axles spin when peddle depressed with no visible axle wobble
- drums on: there is a little DS pad dragging and visible change in spacing (reveal) with the thin plate that the pads are mounted to as the drm spins (not sure what that plate is called)
- wheels on: I put new wheels tires and leaf springs on so I don't think that is the issue. As I mentioned, I replaced the axle, bearing, drum and lugs.

- I really think the wobble is coming from the diff side of the axle though none is visible in the bare axle. It is just magnified with tires on. I did try the stock tires and wobble is present. I'm sure the wobble feels worse because of the larger tires and stiffer HD springs than stock.

- I'm probably going to tear into the diff, but need to find gaskets first so I can get it back together.

Have you guys heard of bearings going in the diff causing ride quality issues?
Regards
Joe

One other thing - I installed new brake pads from buggiesunlimited and they were too long. I had to cut them down to stock size and they seem to work, but not ideal - danger of ordering parts online I guess

Update,
Installed new front hubs and that cleaned up the ride some, but both rear wheels still wobble. I took the diff apart and looked for obvious wear. There was a little wear on the cast aluminum clamps that hold the axle bearings, but they still clamp the bearings tightly. Bearings were good, and ran the diff full throttle with the cover off and all seemed ok. The previous owner had hit something and dented the diff pan, the large oil pickup gear had ground into the pan a bit. My one thought is that the axle housing tubes might have been bent during the hit. Both drums precess with the long axle (DS) moving a bit more than the short (PS). This leads me to believe that either the aluminum clamps are clamping the diff bearing off center of the axle tube or the axle itself is bent, though no bend is apparent with the axle mounted. At this point I'm looking for a new axle housing off an old medalist or TXT.
I took some air out of the rear tires and loosened the bushing bolts on the leaf springs to take out some of the bounce, but it still sucks.
I'm going to work on the body for a few weeks and revisit once I can't stand the wobble anymore.

Try swapping the front tires to the rear
