Default 1998 EZGO series will not run

Guys, bought a 1998 EZGO and has no tow/run switch so I guess that means it is a series cart. Cart needed batteries so we bought 3 12V batteries for it. We cannot get this cart to run at all. Question I have is what voltage does the motor need at the Field and Armature? We see 36 at Armature(A1-A2) but 0 at the Field(S1-S2). Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, Doug

well for starters......what type of batteries did you get? when you bought it did it have 12V batteries in it? it SHOULD have 6 6v golf cart batteries, not 12's....

not to mention......it the battery pack you have only shows 36v......believe it or not, its considered DEAD which is 50% SOC. as a FULLY charged 36v pack will be at 38.2-3volts

oh and btw..... Welcome to our happy little corner of the net, and to BGW. There is a BIG fridge on the back porch with anything you can think of in it...help yourself...of course only take what you can LEGALLY have. Make yourself at home on one of the big fluffy couches, kick your shoes off, put your feet up on one of the tables, yes we are allowed to do that, mom's, wive's, husbands, girlfirends and boyfriends here don't care....and take it easy.

oh...btw....every once in a while a food fight breaks out...so you may not want to wear nice clothes here.

Welcome!!

Thanks sir nuke, the batteries are 12 volt deep cycles and were used in the cart supposedly before we got it without any batteries. And we are registering around 38.5 or so to the controller and to the forward reverse switch it seems to be getting full voltage also, but than again it only reads 38.5 to the armature on the motor but nothing to the fields. Not sure if it is the reverse forward switch going bad or what? Thanks Doug

Something is amiss with the high current circuit. In a series wound motor, the same current passes through the Stator (Field) as passes through the Armature, so you ought to read roughly 1/2 the app[lied voltage on both.

Here is a schematic for a series drive cart with the high current circuit highlighted.

-----------
Check for continuity between A1 & A2. You make have bad brushes in motor.

Thanks guys for the help, i am going to try and post some pics and see if you guys see anything out of the ordinary, went through the high circuit but everything seems correct with it. Still lost, and with the ITS, we set it where we figured it would make the cart go and put a set of vise grips on it and kept it there and put it on jackstands.

You won't get much run time from three 12V batteries, but with them reading 38.5V, the wheels ought to spin when cart is on jack stands.

Does the solenoid click when pedal microswitch closes?
N.O. contacts are used, so lever is released to close them. They should be closed when plunger is in position shown in the picture.

If the solenoid is not clicking, here is a schematic with solenoid activation circuit shown.

If it is clicking, measure between B- and M- terminals on Controller.
You should get FULL battery pack voltage when pedal microswitch is closed, but plunger has not entered ITS sensor coil.
(It the ITS box picture, the plunger is inside the coil, so back it out)

If you do not get FULL pack voltage, use the schematic I posted earlier to find the problem in the high current loop.

Thanks for the help, so far figured out that the solenoid is bad so are going to have to buy a new one, also thinking the ITS is bad so will prob buy a solenoid and see what it does before spending even more of a fortune on a ITS. Thanks for the help so far guys! Doug

Remove the diode from between the solenoid's small terminals and check it again.
A bad diode or a diode installed backwards will make the solenoid coil appear to be bad.

Yeah the diode was still working but the solenoid is bad. Got a new one ordered and on the way hopefully it will be in the next few days and can try it and hope to get this thing working soon. The motor is at least good went ahead and jumped to it and it spins the wheels just fine so hopefully this will get us going. Thanks for the help guys!
