Default 1986 EZGO Electric Gear Oil Capacity :help:

I just recently picked up a 1986 EZGO electric cart. The rear end is making some noise, so I decided it was best to replace the oil since I have no history on the cart. When I drained the old fluid out I only got about 4-5 ounces and a glob of sludgy metal fillings on the drain plug. That scares me. So far I have put in 96 ounces of gear oil and still it is not full. How much gear oil do these things take? I have searched the net and can't find much info on these older units.

I don't know the answer to your question, but 96 ounces sounds like a heck of a lot.

I would check if it's coming out some where.

It ended up taking almost a full gallon before it started leaking out the fill plug. I used 80W-90 gear oil. It seemed to have slowed the cart down a little. The cart ran fine on the low fluid just had the gear whine. It is a little quieter now. I just hope I used the right fluid.

I think that I read some where that it takes 30W oil.

I was hoping the 30W oil was for the later model carts with the newer style gears.

Thanks I am glad I found this site. I have learned a lot already from reading posts on here. I am already looking forward to upgrading to a newer cart. I think the bug has bit me.

Your year cart woud use the 80w 90, do you have the cover on right? If it was upside down it would hold more gear oil, also pull the hubs and see if the oil is leaking out.

I still never found out the capacity for my rear end of my cart. Everytime it gets driven it leaks a little fluid out of the hole on the fill plug. I took the plug out today and saw little bubles on it. I still assume it is way overfilled. I drove about 40 feet or so at full speed with the fill plug off to "pump more fluid out". At this point I am down to around 100ounces. Anyone have any ideas?

IS the plug higher then the middle or lower than the middle if you put the cover upside down it will hold too much fluid and leak on your brakes.take a picture of the rear diff cover and post it here.
