front brake w/ stock back brake???
Looking to upgrade my carts braking power, before starting other performance upgrades. Wondering if any of you have installed an new hydraulic front brake while keeping the stock rear? Which aftermarket system did you use?
I have a generic axle lift kit. 4 bolt steering column. The jakes brake kit will not work on my cart without me taking the suspension back to stock then installing a jakes spindle lift. I did like the fact I would have been able to keep my stock rear brakes...but that does not matter now... The cart is a 01 ezgo series cart. 20" wheels. back seat. 6" lift. |

Re: front brake w/ stock back brake???
Mixing disc and drum breaks causes an imbalance in stopping power.
Auto manufactures tried mixing disc fronts and drum rears in the 80s and 90s and found these cars tended to skid out in front upon hard stopping. If you want to improve your braking go with disc brakes (cable or hydraulic) in the rear and leave the front end alone |

Re: front brake w/ stock back brake???
My front lift is not the Jake's but I do have the Jakes hydraulic front brakes on my EZ-GO TXT cart and I kept the rear factory cable drum brakes on the cart.
Here is a pic of one of my front brakes for you to peek at: I don't know if you can really see much from this photo. The metal brush deflector in the front I had made for these brake calipers as this cart is used 99% for hunting in SW Pa. The hills get steep here and the rear factory brakes are no where near adequate for stopping when coming down some of our hills. I do like the idea of the rear and front brakes being independent of each other. So, should one fail for any reason, I would at least have one system left for braking. BTW, to answer your original question, with the factory rear and the Jake's on the front, the braking on my cart is no longer "scary" and I can stop when coming down a hill. Of course, I'm not choosing any "dare-devil" hills to come down either. Usually gas well roads. But, if you have ever been to SW Pa., you know how steep some of our gas well roads can be. I hope this helps. Dave |

Re: front brake w/ stock back brake???
My stock brakes will squeal the tires with three passengers at over 35 mph. Stock tires. Bigger ones may need more.

I tried the cable rear disc brake kit and hated it. It's complete in a box if anyone wants to buy it.

Re: front brake w/ stock back brake???
What didn't you like about them? I've been a stock brake proponent for years, but may up-size my tires one day. I'm kinda at an impasse, as I did find one hill that I couldn't climb without a running start with only one passenger. Bigger tires will hurt that.

Re: front brake w/ stock back brake???
They (ausco cable rear disc) almost always squealed. I could make it go away for a few days but it always came back. I gave up and put stock drums back on. I installed Jakes hydraulic front disc brakes on my next cart. Those were dead quite but required some leg pressure to stop fast. I realize they are manual brakes and not power brakes. I guess you can't have everything...

Re: front brake w/ stock back brake???
Cars do most of their stopping with the fronts. Most carts only have rears. I would think that adding disks in the front with stock rears would work just fine and more than double your stopping power. I only have stock brakes on my cart and the rears will lock up quite easily if you jam them on.
