brake problems
i have a 92 marathon i got a while back. it didnt run at all when i got it and ive built it up almost as good as new all but the brakes. when i first got it the brakes stopped on a dime but now i dont know if there worn out(its only been a year or so) or if something broke but now the right doesnt stop at all and the left is a little sketch. going down a hill i can put on park and it will still be rolling im not a big brake person and i dont wanna pay $800 to have someone do it for me so can you guys tell me how i go about fixing these things?

Re: brake problems
first off, the brakes are fairly simple. Mine are a LOT newer and mine were having a similar issue.
if you don't have a service manual, you can find a free downloadable manual online. get one. Then take off the rear hubs and see what you have left as far as the shoes go. they may be fine, but the adjustment mechanism may not be working properly. in the manual there are instuctions of how to adjust the brakes after a brake job. but first clean everything up. if/when you take the shoes off, ensure you know which spring goes where, so you can replace them properly. use some brake cleaner and lube the parts that require it. it the shoes were in good enough shape, put them back on adn adjust everything. As I mentioned at the first of this, the best thing is to find and download the service manual for your cart. it will have a lot more detail for the instructions and things like torque values where needed. |

as far as the cables go....if one of them is broken, then sure, if that one side doesn't operate. but it would be easy to see, get up under the cart on that side and have some push on the brakes, if the cable isn't broke, you can see the machanism move as the brake is pushed. |

Re: brake problems
One of my auto adjusters quit working. I tried several times to bend the tab, but never could get them to work. You can't buy just the hinged part that contacts the star, so I PMed a member who just upgraded to disks and got the whole assembly, and it seems to have fixed my problem.

Re: brake problems
when I took mine apart when mine quit adjusting, they were just REAL dirty and stuck. After cleaning up everything, properly lubing what needed to be lubed, and then adjusting them.....all has worked fine and will stop on a dime.

Anyone see anything wrong with it initially? And how do I go about cleaning everything off?

Re: brake problems
It appears one shoe has no friction material on it.

Re: brake problems
Looks that way. If so, you may have damaged the drum.
