if you have an alltrax controller, you need to adjust the "max voltage" slider to a higher setting.

Is this a physical slide switch. What is the possibility of the reed switch doing this? I have limited knowledge but thought there might be a switch to prevent movement when the charger was plugged in. If so, can it be disconnected?

1. No, the over-volt setting is changed via a computer software program for an Alltrax user programmable controller.
2. Anything is possible with electric carts, but the probability of the Reed Switch causing the problem you are describing is very low.
3. The Reed Switch does that, but it typically clsoes the moment the charge plug is disconnect from the cart, or it stays open forever.
4. If you disconnect the Reed Switch, the cart won't run. You have to by-pass the Reed Switch.

----------
The problem you are describing is typically caused by the over voltage cut-off on the controller being set too low. The pack voltage when the charger shuts off on a 36V pack is usually in the 44 to 46 volt range and it takes about 12 hours for it to settle down to the 38.2V fully charged voltage.

If the controller over-volt setting is less than the charger shut-off voltage, the cart won't run until the pack self-discharges down to whatever the controller over-volt setting is. If it is a stock or non-programmable controller, you may have to learn to wait or replace the controller.

What does the pack voltage have to get down to before the cart will run?

If overvoltage is your problem, you could try turning your lights on for a minute. That should drop the surface charge enough so you can go!

It's a 96 stock cart. No lights. I guess we will live with it. Other problem is one of the post on the motor gets real hot if you drive relatively slow. Post on top nearest the end of the motor. Not smoking.

Motors can draw a lot of amps at low RPM and get mighty hot (Max case temperature is 115°C), but no cable or connection ought to be getting hot.
If any are, they need to be fixed before irreversible damage is done.

There are a lot of variables, but motor is the only part of the drive system that ought to be getting hot. The solenoid and controller might get mighty warm and in a series drive, the F/R switch will get warm. Other than that, everything else should stay within about 10°F or so of the air temperature.

Use two wrenches when removing the cables on the motor studs, one on the bottom nut to keep stud from turning and damaging the wiring inside the motor.
