Default 2009 RXV whine

Greetings all,

This is my first post so please be gentle!

I recently acquired a used 2009 Electric RXV. The previous owner had bumped up the speed, but the car whines loudly any time I step on the accelerator. The faster the speed, the higher the pitch of the whine. I've been searching online for similar issues and answers, but I'm not having much luck.

This is my first golf cart - I've heard the whine is normal, but I've never heard an electric cart make this much a noise. Recently I was at a golf tournament at a local club where the golfers rolled out in a fleet of RXVs. Not one of them made anywhere near as much noise as mine.

How much is normal? Are there any special sounds I should be listening for?

There have been a few posts about whining noises on the RXV's. I would do some searching on the forum. From what I have read it sounds like could be a fluid issue or issues with the hubs not being tightened enough. Might just start having to do simple things like change the diff fluid and see if it helps. Also inspect the oil for metal could also be a problem. If it doesn't help I would move to looking at the wheel hubs and bearings.

Thanks for the quick response!

I'm afraid I'm not skilled or knowledgeable enough (yet) to do this work myself - I'll do some more research to learn. I had seen some of the other posts you mentioned, but maybe I'm making a mountain out of a molehill.

I'm still wondering: how much of a whine is considered "normal"? Or should it not be whining at all?

I've never seen or heard an RXV, but I have a lot of experience in AC motors fed by VFDs, which is what an RXV does. The motor "screams" when fed "fake" AC, so if the sound is coming from the motor, it could be normal.

I have a 2010 rxv and have the same noise. I think it is the electro magnetic brake trying to slow it down. I understand that golf courses set the speed around to 14 mph max, so if you get to the set speed the brake is trying to keep from running away, works like a governor. Let me know if you find out anything else.

That sounds like a possibility, but it doesn't explain the 20+ RXV golf carts that pulled out of the driveway for the tournament with only tire noise... I'll keep you posted.
