Default Fuse Size for Radio?

So Im going to install a JVC stereo that has a 10amp fuse in the back of the unit. I'm going to connect it to my fuse block, but not sure what size fuse to get? Should I just put a 10amp in there? I read you don't want to use too big of a fuse or it may cause damage so it has me worried now. Any input would be awesome!

If the fuse block is easier to get to than the back of the radio, that is where I'd put a smaller fuse.

Kidding aside, a 10A would be fine.

I would be very surprised to see a car stereo that draws anywhere close to 10 amps. My entire system with a 4 x 35w amplifier draws less than 10 amps with the volume cranked up. A 5 amp fuse should be sufficient for the average stereo.

The output power rating of you system might be optimistic.
4 X 35W = 140W
140W / 12V = 11.67A.

As for car stereos drawing more than 10A, if you have ever heard thumping bass coming from a passing car, the stereo in that car is most likely drawing far more than 10A.

There are special fuses designed to protect high value circuits, but in general terms fuses are fire protection devices and fuse sizing is a compromise between an ampacity high enough for continuous operation and low enough to prevent a fire should a catastrophic circuit failure occur.

I said a 10A was fine because it was the size the OEM's lawyers and accountants had installed on the unit, what size the engineering department originally specified is unknown.

If it was mine, I might go a little lighter on the fuse that is easier to change, but I'm not sure if I go all the way down to half. If the nominal input amps for the unit was known, I'd probably fuse it at about 125% of that value.

The output of many of the internal amps of the head units is what the fuse on the back is for, not the fuse of the input of the unit itself. with that in mine, the 5 amp 720 Deere mentioned would be more than enough.

On top of this. certainly you know the make a d model of your head unit.....GOOGLE is your friend and you could most likely find the user manual for it online, which would usually tell you what size fuse for the input of the unit.

Thanks for all the replies! I did google the Manual before hand but just wanted some good advice from here as well. I'll go with a 10A fuse.
