Default Newbie with an MPT 1000

Needed a cart for work (maintenance supervisor on a 16 acre property) and found a cart on Craigslist. Not exactly the best deal bet the best I could find in the LA area with beefed up torque and hauling capacity. Bummer is someone stole, I should say ripped, the batteries out. Which means I'm rewiring all the battery connections since they probably acted as carry straps for the stolen batts. Still had two left but I'm opting to start with a whole set. Planning on going with US 145's for the extended run time.

After learning way more than I thought possible about carts I now have a couple questions. Looks like larger gauge cables are where it's at since more juice flow is the name of the game. I can get my hands on some 2/0 welding cable. Curious though. Ive found some double sided lugs online but haven't seen discussion of them. Also folks talk about soldered ends.? One question is, if its all about amperage and flow, why even cut the cables? I was thinking of stripping some of the sheathing and using the double barrel lugs and just separate the strands enough for the battery posts. Is there a reason the copper shouldn't touch the lead terminals? Again, this is the first of many questions.

I would imagine it would be very hard to protect these wires from the corrosive atmosphere they will reside in, this alone will cause problems. Folks go with soldered ends and heat shrink to reduce as much as possible the effects of exposed wires.

Jake, you are right to get a COMPLETE new set. and not just the battery cables but a complete matching set of high current cables. You can find some threads about soldered vs. crimped cables, but for my money, a quality soldered joint is the best, but that is IMHO. And, if you want the best for your cart. check out ScottyB's at CartsUnlimited.net he as ready made soldered sets ready to go, and in 2 ga.

oh and btw...... CONGRATS on your ride and Welcome to our happy little corner of the net, and to BGW. There is a BIG fridge on the back porch with anything you can think of in it...help yourself...of course only take what you can LEGALLY have. Make yourself at home on one of the big fluffy couches, kick your shoes off, put your feet up on one of the tables, yes we are allowed to do that, mom's, dad's, wive's, husband's, girlfriend's and boyfriend's here don't care....and take it easy.

oh...btw....every once in a while a food fight breaks out...so you may not want to wear nice clothes here.

Welcome!!

And when they say to upgrade all wires to 2/0 does that mean every wire under the seat or just the batteries, controller, solenoid

Alright, take 2. Bought 8 new batteries, made all new cables, followed the diagrams and wired everything back up. The battery level indicator only showed one red bar at the very top (which I considered a very good sign) but I went to grab the charger as I had read on scottyB's site that you should put the charger on your new set before the first use to make sure they are fully charged. Before I got the chance I heard a 'pop' and a little wisp of smoke come up from the solenoid. Considering this cart had been sitting for a year and the solenoid looked like it was original from 2001 and rusty from previous owners misuse I'm assuming this is the culprit. I'm trying to find the heavy duty replacement but don't see any that look similar, 2 large posts and 4 four tabs for connectors. I guess i'm just curious about the life span of solenoids and the likelyhood this is where the problem is. The battery indicator light is still showing the one red bar at the top but I thought ALL the bars should be lit up if the charge was full. Alright, fire away please.

I think I figured something out. The two little stab connectors on either side of the large posts can be used on the two smaller posts of an after market solenoid. I'm hoping, because i'm about to order one.

Buggy solenoids have two large posts and two small posts. There are several wires on each of the small posts, including the diode.

And the popping and smoke? Sound like a solenoid?
