Sometimes it needs to roll a bit?
New to the golf cart world and i bought a fixer upper. Go figure? So I have a 6 seat 48v cart with a Curtis controller and 6 8v 2012 batteries. Holds a charge well and runs well. There are 2 issues i have no idea how to fix.
1. The cart runs regardless of whether the key is in it or not? 2. It randomly decides to not go forward or reverse when it sits for a bit. I find that if i push the cart for a foot or 2 or play with the f/r switch a bit, it will move. And when it starts moving, it does great. I can come to a complete stop, drive it in reverse, park for a sec, and you would never see a difference. Park it for a minute and its back to playing with the f/r switch and pushing the cart a foot or 2. I already put a new key switch and f/r switch and it did nothing for it. Does this sound like a motor problem or should i be focused on the solenoids or micro switch? |

CONGRATS on the ride, and Welcome to our happy little corner of the net, and to BGW. There is a BIG fridge on the back porch with anything you can think of in it...help yourself...of course only take what you can LEGALLY have. Make yourself at home on one of the big fluffy couches, kick your shoes off, put your feet up on one of the tables, yes we are allowed to do that, mom's, wive's, husbands, girlfirends and boyfriends here don't care....and take it easy.
oh...btw....every once in a while a food fight breaks out...so you may not want to wear nice clothes here. Welcome!! |

Re: Sometimes it needs to roll a bit?
I would guess that the solenoid is stuck closed. This would cause the driving with the key off. Do you hear a click just as you press the throttle pedal? You should! The intermittent operation can be caused by the solenoid also. If the contacts are stuck, the full current usually won't go through them. The being stuck is caused by a small weld on the two contacts keeping them together, but only in a very small area.

You can barely hear a click when you first press down on the throttle. Sounds more like a micro switch than a solenoid. Since i just bought this and I never heard it before, im not sure if what im hearing is loud enough to be the solenoid.

Re: Sometimes it needs to roll a bit?
Well....I took the solenoid out and had it tested and nothing was wrong with it. I put it back in, reconnected the batteries, and now the cart wont move at all! There is no run tow switch so I didnt have to mess with that! I put the cart on jacks and jumped the large terminals of the solenoid with no response from the motor. The controller is blinking 3 yellow 3 yellow which I didn't notice before. Also, I used to hear the motor switching from Fwd to Rev when i toggled the switch......now I hear nothing. I know there are a lot of really smart people on this forum, so I just need to borrow one of you.
