Default charging while driving

Hi, I'm new so be patient, I don't golf, in fact I hate golf but I am using a EZ GO electric for transportation around a small community.

I own a 15 amp charger AND a very quiet Honda Generator. The generator can charge the cart when the cart is stationary but it can not when moving. There has to be a way to override the charging immobilizer. I know I could just cut the plug and go direct to the batteries but I'm trying to avoid this.

Some one must have tried this.

This unit also has a professionally mounted solar panel for a roof.

thankx

Take the magnet out of the charger's plug. Item 39 on attached drawing.
Or bypass the Reed switch. (This is a common modification, since EZGO stopped installing Reed switches in later years)

Is the solar panel for the main battery pack or for a 12V accessory battery?

Thanks for the diagram.

I think they have removed the magnet already or somehow bypassed it because it does in fact charge 20 amps /36 volts going down the road.

By technical power numbers alone that is . 20 amps X 36 volts = 720 watts plus 100 watts = 820 watts. That is 1.10 HP. EZ0GO says the motor is 3,0 HP continuous for the 48 volt version so at full throttle my conversion will add about 50% more range or time. In that most carts do very little pedal to the metal for 2 hours (the max range I'm told) the charger could in fact make the cart last all day, but at night I now have some very good lighting options. As far as lighting, if you can afford it, look at high intensity Motorcycle Lights from MotoLights. \\

If not look on the net for LED motorcycle ATV Boat lights. 10-18 watts each and very very bright with minimal current draw. Look at 10 Watt CREE from (shut my mouth) China for about $50. There is a brand Kunotaring that works pretty good. If you want to throw down the road get the 8 degree pencil beam. You can also get a square Driving/work light that thrown light all over the place. Same light BTW makes an excellent back up light for a PU.

The honda generator is a Honda EU2000i which is 2KW peak and 1.6KW continuous. The manual says it will run for 9.6 hours on one gallon. It has this auto throttle option where it runs full power while charging full power but as the charge becomes complete the amps on the charger drop to 5 watts or so then the Generator just idles and then you can hardly hear it and who the heck knows how long the fuel will last.

So far I like it.

Or something like what is discussed in this thread. http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/elect...nology-eh.html

--------------
FWIW: The Honda generator gets its efficiency by converting the output of the gasoline engine driven alternator to DC and then using an inverter to produce a 60Hz 120VAC. This allows the gas engine to run at a varying RPM instead of a fixed RPM to provide a constant 60Hz.

The engines in most backup/emergency generator systems have to run at a steady RPM (IE: 3600RPM) to maintain a 60Hz output, so they use about the same amount off fuel per hour whether they are completely unloaded or loaded at their max power output.

Congrats.....you now have your own version of EZ-GO's "Exceed" Hybrid technology of electric carts. Well....kind of.

Like your own "trailer trash" (and I mean that in a nice way) model.

You know...theirs is the mansion version: http://www.ezgo.com/Exceed.html

And....your's is not quite as compact.

Actually his is way nicer. The ezgo version is a loud briggs generator, and only manages about 7.5 amp charge rate.

Richard didn't state which 36V charger he's using, but if it is one of the ferroresonant transformer type units, the charge rate (amps) is determined by the On-Charge voltage, so it will be pumping out whatever its max amps are whenever the pack voltage is below about 42V and still only be running the Honda generator at about half its max power output, so both the fuel usage and noise level should be fairly low.
