The solenoid will get warm, but it shouldn't get hot. Could be bad connections on the high current cables or bad contacts inside the solenoid.
Needs to be fixed or replaced.

The motor may get too hot to touch, but the case temperature shouldn't exceed 115°C (239°F), which is hot enough to boil water.
I try to stay below 200°F.

What drive system do you have? (Series or sepex motor)

This is a curious thread. Johnnie running for 10 or so miles my motor temp will show 170-180 with a laser and alltrax exray. The solenoid will be 150 and sometimes higher. Solenoid is HD 400-1000 peak, all wires tight and clean.

I use the same solenoid and it has gotten fairly warm, but I've never measured its actual temperature.

My motor probably runs a bit hotter than yours because I climb more hills in any direction I go, than can be found in the entire state of Florida.

The stock PDS motor which a DCX400 did get hotter than the aftermarket motor with a DCX500 I now run.

After 5000 miles over 2.5 years, my heat paranoia is gone. I am careful and oblige all the suggestions for pds motors. I M just careful. My journeys always have stops and that seems to balance things out. Things eventually burn out or wear out on golf carts. LOL, I still keep a tow rope, cell phone and AAA card just in case.

I always have the heat in the back of my mind. I started a temp gun regiment a few months ago and track it every time we come back to the house. Of course Iam stock with 23.12's. I do not have as many hills as Johnnie, but I am a slooow poker..I think the only way iam not going to worry is when I can upgrade..
