Should I leave the charger plugged in or take it out after fully charged?
Hello,
Now I do realize there are many posts like this out there, however upon thorough research, I still could not come up with an answer. If I have missed a post about this same issue, I sincerely apologize. I live in an apartment and I have a Powerwise 48v charger hooked up to an outlet by a balcony of mine, since the parking space is right in front of my home. I took a casual golf cart ride around the neighborhood and stopped to buy some groceries, and came back about two hours later. The battery was still at around a 90% ish charge, so I went ahead and started to charge the golf cart. My question is: Should I still leave it plugged in when it's at full charge? I live in an apartment complex, so I just don't feel as comfortable leaving my charger on. Granted, I have a bike lock and the charger is all secure, but I'm afraid bugs would start messing with my extension cord, since it travels through a long line of bushes. Could I put it on tow mode while it's at full charge to prevent the battery from decreasing and switch it back when I ride it? Thank you! |

considering you don't have a garage.....after your ride, plug in your cart and let her charge up to 100%. Then take your charger and put it inside, safe and sound. but every time you use your cart.....once you are done for the day, plug it in and take it back to 100%. and there is no need to switch to tow mode.

A quality outdoor grade extension cord would be more or less bug proof, but there might be some other critters that would mess with it, both the four legged and two legged varieties. IE: It might be a tripping hazard for other residents of the apartment complex, or the groundskeepers might run over it with a lawn mower. Leaving the cart in the Tow mode when you aren't using it, is probably a good idea for security and safety reasons, but it won't help much for keeping the battery pack charged since it only shuts off one of the three ways it is being discharged while sitting. 1. Self discharge. This is the biggie of the three. Cart batteries self-discharge at about 1% per day. Even if the batteries were completely disconnected and taken out of the cart, this would still happen. It cannot be prevented, but it can be compensated for. (IE: Float charging) 2. The charge on filter capacitors in the controller bleeds off and is replenished via the pre-charge resistor across the solenoid contacts. The Run/Tow switch does not turn this off. 3. The controller in standby mode uses some energy. The Run/Tow will shut the controller completely off. Self-discharge roughly equates to a discharge rate of about 10mA (0.010A) and the other two are no more than a few Milli-Amps each, so the energy savings wouldn't be much even if the Run/Tow switch did stop all three instead of just one. |
