Battery Question
Finely got my 95 medalist running..... after 2 bad pre charge resistors..... started riding it after a full charge. And it ran pretty slow, after driving it around the block a few times it ran VERY slow..... I just ran my muti meter on each individual battery first 2 in series read about 5.7, 5.9.... 3rd 3.5.... 4th 5.9 5th 5.9, 6th 1.3. I am guessing the 2 low readings are the bad batteries. They are all trojan t-105s deep cycle. They have been sitting on shelf for over a year not being used, was worried they might not work. Can I buy 2 different brand batteries and use the other trojan? or is it not good to mix and match?

Re: Battery Question
When did you take the readings? They should be taken 12 hours after your cart charger turns off to be meaningful. At this point they all look bad, but four may be "OK". If so, look for two used batteries, that are about in the same age and condition, but definitely the same make and model if possible, but definitely the same amp hour rating.

Re: Battery Question
test was done after driving it for awhile..... The trojan batteries are supposedly "new" but water leaks from the vent caps a little.... haha they were unproven batteries....... My guess is they all might be bad.... just was hoping the 2 low readings were the bad ones....... any recommendations on batteries?? I read to fully charge batteries and then do readings after this post...... Ill do that tonight and let ya know

Re: Battery Question
Golf cart batteries self-discharge at about 1% per day, so if the were fully charged when they were placed on the shelf, they were 100% discharged well before the end of the first year and sat for the remainder of the 2 years in a completely discharged state.
The plates started sulfating before the end of the first month and the sulfation rate increased as they became more discharged, so I'm not the least bit surprised they don't move the cart very fast or very far and I believe their only value at this point, is core exchange. ------------ Here is a list of 6V batteries that are often used in golf carts. If the batteries you are looking at aren't on the list, just find a battery with an AH rating that is the same (or mighty close) and that is where it would appear if it was on the list. The trick is to find the highest AH you can afford at the best price you can find in you local area. |

Re: Battery Question
You can mix battery brands...... just match amp hour rating
This is important even when buying the same brand. Let say you have a pack of 225 amp hour batteries and you replace one with a less expensive 200 amp hour battery. The whole pack is as good as the lowest amp hour battery in the pack. |

Re: Battery Question
Have you guys ever used batteries plus, called them yesterday to see what they had.... He did not give me the part number, but he said they carry a Duracell battery. I asked him what the amp hour ratings were and he said he didn't know. Just wondering if anyone has used a Duracell in their cart??

Re: Battery Question
Ask them the amp hour capacity. You're looking at around $600 with tax, so he needs to get off his lazy a$$ and look it up.
Battery prices vary quite a bit regionally, so it's worth it to call around, even an hour drive may be worth it. In the Atlanta area, I bought eight Trojan T-105s from Batteries Plus (Bulbs now) for $105, including delivery and core pickup. I only had six cores, but a buddy had a school bus battery so I got more than a core refund a few days later. |
