just got my cart 02 ezgo.put charger on but only goes down to 3%never shuts off.is this normal or are the batterys getting old?

Re: charging question
How long do you let it charge for? 3 amps is good but if it want cutoff by it's self it maybe the charger, batteries, are both.
Check the batteries with a meter and see what they read. 6.3 volts each or better. If one of them is going bad it will keep the charger going and try to build it up to the rest of them, which in return will boil the rest of the batteris.
Since you said it's a 02 cart I assume it has the Power Wise charger and those boards are bad about going out in them. Which most people will just bypass the board and it will charge it just want cut off.

Re: charging question

Re: charging question
pookie1135 do you know anyone with a charger like yours you could try to see if it charges all the way prior to shutting off. your voltage seems ok. these cart motors efficiencies are more based on amps for performance.cart is driving fine I assume? you never mentioned any issues with cart problems related to this

Re: charging question
From my experience 6.30 is on the low side but would be in line with the age of your batteries. Is the 40.5 at the end of the charge cycle? Typically this should be around 44 volts near the end of the charge cylce.

Re: charging question
my batteries in my cart all read around 6.3 but my charger shuts off at end of charge they are 2003 bats. and I am changing them out next spring so I can start the year fresh and new 4 guage cables. you may have something going on with the charger.

Re: charging question
40 volts at end of charging cycle.cart runs good just charger wont shut off.lifted cover on batt and saw bubbles.i thought charger should be at 36 not 40?have full charge on meter.

Re: charging question
A new set of batteries should read 42 volts or higher. This is 7 volts per battery. With the age of your batteries and weather they were taken care of properly they could read 6 volts.
A 6 volt battery is considered dead at 6 volts. Your charger should go down to 3 to 2 amps on the needle and shut off, older batteries may take it down to 5amps and never shut off due to a bad battery. Most of the time when a charger doesn't cutoff it's trying to get one battery to catch up to the rest of the pack.

Re: charging question
about 4 hrs.

Andy4639 09-30-2008 09:52 PM

Re: charging question
That's not nearly enough time.:oops: Let it charge for 6 or 8 hrs. if it will charge that long. New batteries can take up to 16 hrs. charging the first couple of times. Let the charger cutoff by its self.
