Pre built brakes
I have done hundreds of brake jobs on Cars and carts, but I have never seen the pre set-up brake cluster assembly that they sell for ezgo's before. It is a brake backing plate with pre installed shoes, springs . adjuster and everything! I tried them and man are they easy. You just pull off the clevis pin that holds the brake cable to the brake backing plate, unbolt your old backing plate and bolt in the new one with 4 bolts! It is the simplest brake job I have ever done! It took about 10 minutes. See one from golfcartking.com here:

Re: Pre built brakes
Its a good idea but ouch... $220 for the pair. To be honest I would buy the disc brakes first..

Re: Pre built brakes
Yes, they aren't cheap - but cheaper on ebay. I wonder what the pros use? I wonder if it is worth the savings in time for them......

Re: Pre built brakes
Is it "normal" when your rear brakes wear down, to need to replace everything? Can you just replace the brake pads, or are the drums to worn out to continue to use them?

Re: Pre built brakes
It depends. If you have used your brakes until there is a grumbling noise when you apply them, that means that the brake shoes have all ground down and now the metal beneath them is grinding against the metal brake drums. In this case, you have to replace both the shoes and the drum, as the brake shoes have damaged the brake drums. But, on the other hand, if you catch them before the shoes wear down so the metal beneath them is grinding against the drum, you will usually be OK with just replacing the shoes only. The shoes are designed to be softer than the drums, so they wear before the drums........

Re: Pre built brakes
It is a major convenience - but the pros buy shoes by the crate and reuse everything. Cheaper that way.
I have just ordered my first complete brake assembly for a 2002 CC I have. Didn't stop when I got it. Looked and the whole assembly was gone But I have done this a few times for trailer brakes - it's clean and easy. Kind of like those windshield wiper commercials. Where the guy says he'll be all day switching em out |

Re: Pre built brakes
Installing a new brake cluster on a 2006 precedent. Does anyone know the torque for the bolts which hold the backing plate to the axle. Thanks

Re: Pre built brakes
Its a new German word I made up "Good-n-tite" LOL........ Seriously, I just used new bolts and put them on tight! I used stainless steel cause I'm a big stainless fan and they looked cool on there! You can get direct replacement bolts for a quarter at the hardware store!
