Default Hot Hot Resistor Coil

Hope I have this in the right forum! Newbie PIA! Thanks for redirecting me.

Newbie to forum and newbie golf cart owner. I found the forum after purchasing a used '88 EZ go electric cart, and discovering smoking wires and a part too hot to touch after driving for appox. 10 minutes. The smoke was coming from wires touching a hot metal vented cover. I had no idea what the part was, so I researched it on the internet. It is the resistor coil metal vented cover that is getting so hot. Is this normal? If it is not normal, what needs to be corrected? I'm excited to be a part of the forum. Thanks, guys!

Welcome to BGW

Those are resistor coils. That is how the speed is kept in check. If you go wide open throttle the resistor coils should be out of the circuit and not be too hot. It is normal for the coils to get hot under say....half throttle...anything other than wide open the coils will get hot.

Disconnect the pack and make sure everything is working properly. Make sure the linkage is not binding up somewhere and not allowing it to go wide open.

An electronic speed control won't do this because they don't have coils.

The cover shouldn't be getting hot guys. This tells me something has broke or is getting weak. There is a fiber board under the metal cover that is suppose to take the heat and isolate the cover from the coils it may have gotten in bad shape where it's not doing it's intended job.
