Default Need less torque....

OK gurus.... My TXT currently has a D&D ES-63-49 rated at close to 10 HP. Cart has a LOT of torque that I really don't need here in Florida. Is there a way to dial back the torque? Speed is 25 right now per the GPS, really don't need more speed either, but I would take some speed over the torque.

Keep it simple now, I have trouble following ya'll sometimes

put an 8:1 rear in it...will eat up a bunch of your torque and get another 6-8mph...

if you want to dial down BOTH the torque and speed some.....about the only way to really do it is if you have a programmable controller and go in and reset some of the parameters.

I'm really just looking to dial down the torque, but not if I need to replace all the gears. I thought there might be a easy way to reduce the torque.

Easiest way to reduce tq? Put a brick under the throttle.

The only other ways cost money.
1) gears (already mentioned)
2) larger tires
3) aftermarket, low amp programmable controller
4) replace D&D motor with stock motor

A few more details about the cart and drive system would help answering the question.
What I can determine so far:
The D&D ES-63-49 is a Hi-Torque Sepex motor (+40% @ 36V)
The cart is a TXT, so it is 1995 or later and was originally a DCS or a PDS.
You most likely have an aftermarket controller, since a stock DCS or PDS controller would only feed that motor 300A and you wouldn't be having excessive torque issues.

If you have a user programmable controller, solving your torque issue is only a matter of altering a few parameters like Max amps, throttle up rate and throttle response curve.

What make/model controller are you using?
What size battery pack 36V, 42V or 48V?
What is the tire height?

Also, what specifically is the torque problem? (IE: Can't take off without spinning tires)

The D&D motor I'm running doesn't have quite as much torque as yours (+30% @ 36V vs your +40% @ 36V), but I'm running it @ 42V and had to tone it down some so I could take off on grass without digging up the turf.

I'm with knothead. Can't imagine wanting less torque unless trading for more speed. Tell you what, I'll trade motors with you.

I'm with Johnnie on this - the easiest way to dial back Torque is in the controller settings. First thing I would try is a lower throttle setting. Reduce it by 2. If its set at 5 go to 3. That should fix the too much power problem as it will take a longer time to reach the same output. That will give you a feeling of smoother acceleration. Technically you are not really reducing torque - you are dialing back the response time. If you truely want to reduce the power available then reduce the output from say 100% to 75% and try that.

That trade won't work, or at least it won't work with the cart described in you Signature.

The motor firenfix has is a Spepex, you've got a Series.

FWIW: A little enlightenment for Knothead and others.

The problem isn't too much torque, it's torque management.

Granted, it is nice to have enough torque to spin the tires on dry pavement and do wheelies, but those aren't things most of us want to do all the time.

With a programmable controller, you can adjust when and how much torque is applied to the rear tires, so you can leave the starting line like a dragster or like a luxury sedan with a powerful engine, or something in between.

The D&D motor I'm using has less torque (and more speed) than the one firenfix is using, but I still had to back off on the settings I had been using with a DCX400 feeding a stock PDS motor, so I could get the cart moving on grass without spinning the tires. If I made a conscious effort to tread lightly and slowly on the pedal, I could do it, but if I didn't, there was a high probability I would leave some tracks behind.

Also, my wife enjoys driving our cart after I domesticated it, she wouldn't even ride in it when I first put the DCX500 and ES-76-51 in.
