Default What should I be looking for?

I just found your site yesterday and have been reading as much as possible. I'm looking at getting a golf cart in the next few months for cruising around the campgrounds when we go camping. Once I get a golf cart I would like to put a lift in it, new tires, do the interior up, etc.

So far, from the reading I've done, it looks like I want to get a 36V and upgrade to a 48V so as to increase the speed and power. Is this correct so far? If so, what kind of golf cart should I be looking for?

Thanks in advance for all your help.

Hey , Welcome to BGW ! I would try to find a 48 volt cart to fix up to keep from having to do that upgrade . I had an EZ-GO 36 volt series cart and they are cool carts but lack in power (especially with lifts and bigger tires) . I would def look for a EZGO PDS or RXV . Club Cars (I think) all the Precedents are 48 volt , I know some of the DS's are too. The Yamaha Drive (G-29) are also 48 volt . Hope this helps ya in your search for a campground cruiser.... - Mayor

well it really all depends on what you will use it for and how.....I have a Series 07 TXT, I got it for a good price, and them took it totally apart and did all the mods. If you see at the bottom of this post, in my sig, you can see all my mods. and I am still at 36v. Where I am at, its pretty flat, so I don't have to worry about hills. and because of the motor I have, it runs 27 mph, and has a documented range of 25 miles between charges. SO.....it just all depends on what you want/like.

oh and btw......Welcome to our happy little corner of the net, and to BGW. There is a BIG fridge on the back porch with anything you can think of in it...help yourself...of course only take what you can LEGALLY have. Make yourself at home on one of the big fluffy couches, kick your shoes off, put your feet up on one of the tables, yes we are allowed to do that, mom's, dad's, wive's, husband's, girlfriend's and boyfriend's here don't care....and take it easy.

oh...btw....every once in a while a food fight breaks out...so you may not want to wear nice clothes here.

Welcome!!

It just depends. Our buggy is a 36v TXT PDS EZGO. The controller had been upgraded before we acquired the cart. It has a 300 amp DCX AllTrax in it which is not much bigger than stock. No lift just slightly larger rear tires, maybe an inch taller than stock. We cruise the neighborhood streets, pastures, and yards. It does great, runs in the upper teens. We haul stuff in the utility bed all the time. Fits our needs and desires to a "T" as they say.

When done, I want a cart that is fast and has power. Can I get that speed and power from a 48v? or should I get a 36V?

Welcome to BGW!
I can talk about the CC side of things...
All CCs 2004 and later are 48v, which means all Precedents are 48v, since they were introduced in 04. The DS models were introduced in 1980, and they can have a number of drive systems: 36v resistor, 36v controller, and 48v controller.
I feel that a 48v controller cart would be best for your wants, as you could upgrade the controller, motor, etc and get some good results.

The next question I would ask is: "How fast do you want to go?" there are multiple models from different manufacturers that will go different speeds. in stock form, anywhere from 12 to 19.5 mph.

are you planning to lift the cart and put larger wheels and tires on it? or are you just going to run stick size tires? all of these thing need to be taken into account as to the direction you will end up going.

I plan on putting a lift on it and bigger tires. As of right now, I would say a 6" - 8" lift, and not sure what size tires. Most of the time I will be using to cruise around the campgrounds, some of the campgrounds we go to are perfectly flat, but some, up in Lake George, have some pretty good hills. If I was to guess what speed I was looking for, I would say anywhere between 20 to 30 mph? What I don't want to do is buy a golf cart and once I start lifting it, etc. find out I should of gotten something different. Thanks for your help.

well seeing as how you plan to lift it and put larger tires on it, you WILL be needing to replace the entire delivery system to make it last. I am talking about the Controller, Solenoid, Cables, F&R switch (if you get or have a series cart) and maybe a motor.

Lets assume you will need to buy a new set of batteries.....in that case, go 48v, as you can buy a 36v cart, and since you will be buying a new controller anyway, and the aftermarket controllers will work with both, just have it set up for 48v and go with it.

Look at my sig......IN started off with a stock 36v Series TXT. basically, I replaced everything. because I knew STOCK wasn't going to get it.

It now has a 6" lift, 23" tires, back seat, 500a programmable controller, SD Solenoid, HD F&R Switch, 2ga cables, High Speed Motor.....and its still running 36v.....and runs 27 mph.....and has a range of between 26 to 30 miles between charges. IF I decide to go up to 48V, all I have to do is change only resistor in the solenoid, change a couple of setting on the controller, put in 48v battery pack and buy a 48v charger and that upgrade will get me approximately 30% more speed and torque, so about 33-35 mph.

so now its time for you to figure out which direction you want to do. Here is what my cart looks like now. and here is my build thread with all the details and lots of pictures. and YES, believe it or not....this is my very first cart.
