Default How to questions on Cleaning my Axle & Motor

I have pulled the rear axle to paint it and installa lift kit and I have pulled the motor and it has alot of "black dust" in it and i was wonderin if it would help if i cleaned it while its apart?? or if i should go with the pattened "if it aint broke dont fix it" method.

Also, can you paint the case alumminum part of the axle or will it cause some kind of over heating? i put a box around it for reference.

I would take the motor apart and blow all of the carbon dust from the brushes out of it.
Check the brushes to see if they need replacing. If you are not familiar with spring loaded brushes they can be tricky to put back together.
I would also replace the bearing in the motor.

There is no problem painting the aluminum case.

Thank you. I want to pain the case black.

Is there any benifit to cleaning and replacing the bushings? ex: performance, life of the motor, etc.

Also: Is it expensive to do this?

Measure the brushes and compare with dimensions listed in the service manual. If they're in tolerance, keep driving.

They're expensive, and will not affect service. They either work, or they don't.

While you have it apart, replace the bearing and clean the commutators with a ScothBrite.

I guess with that thought i will go with the "if it aint broke dont fix it thought. Especially if they are expensive because if I’m going to put money into a motor, i might as well put it toward a new motor down the road.

I just ride it out until i cant anymore.

What bearing are you speaking of? I still consider an amateur at this so I don’t know common things yet.

I don't see any problem in painting the case. You might want to use heat proof paint, available at the hardware store.....
