Default Failing F&R Switch.

My friend and I were riding the cart the other night and started smelling something electrical burning and the cart slowed down to less than half speed and had no power at all. I lifted the seat and thought the smell was coming from the controller (AXE4865). I limped the cart home and decided to deal with it another day. I used the cart again today and it worked fine but I traced the smell down to the F&R switch. So my question is could a failing or overheated F&R switch cause the controller to go into "limp mode"? Or was the F&R switch itself the reason the cart slowed and had no power?

A bad F/R switch will produce the symptoms you describe.

The AXE controllers have several error conditions, but I think the controller shuts down if they occur rather than going into a limp-home mode.

With a 650A controller, 2Ga cables and 23" tires, you need one of scottyb's Heavy-Duty F/R assemblies (http://www.cartsunlimited.net/F_R_Switch_Upgrades.html)or a Super-Duty reversing contactor system(http://www.cartsunlimited.net/Reversing_Contactors.html).

Pull the wires off of your F\R switch (making sure you mark each one so that you put them back on the same terminal.) You should see the wire coating melting if it is in fact the wire that is heating up. Now, if it's the F\R switch, you will need to "pull" this apart. This isn't as difficult as it sounds, but if your concerned about it, then take it to a place that will do it for you.

Ok thanks for your replies, I will take it apart and look at it when I get time. I planned on putting a HD F&R switch when I built the cart about a year ago, but funds ran low. It is literally the weakest link in the system, especially with 23"
Tires, 650amp controller, and a plum quick assassin motor. I still have the schematic that I drew when I built it, so I will use that to go by when I replace it. The reversing contactor that Scotty b has is awfully tempting.
